Drive by past the Gaylord Texan Resort and the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine and wind down behind a row of modest homes where the city seems to slip away. The cooling blue fountain, wooden gazebo with stone columns and lush plant-life help the stressors of city life slip seamlessly away.

After an excellent glass of wine or two at La Buena Vida Vineyards our group, predominately filled with couples, were relaxed and ready to take on the task at hand. We were there for a lesson on the art of sushi rolling at the hands of Chef Cameron Cook.

While this is his third time instructing a class on sushi, he has held many different classes that seem more like date night than attending school.

The real test began when the individual rolling competition got underway. At stake was a bottle of La Buena Vida Vineyards wine of your choice and of course bragging rights for the best sushi roll. Chef Cam explained that he was solely in charge of the knives, which turned out to be a good thing as the group quickly became embroiled friendly competition as husband challenged wife and friend battled friend for the title. The results were stunning by this group of first time sushi enthusiasts as creativity and quest for a great bottle of wine filled the air.

Laughter abounded while we sampled each other’s work and waited out the results of the competition. In the end the victors were declared and all went home looking forward to Chef Cam’s next dinner, a crawfish boil replete with Salsa lessons from a dance master April 14th.
