Zen Enters Cupcake Arena

by Steven Doyle

I am not really sure where the cupcake sits in the pastry line-up these days. This past weekend I had the opportunity to step into more than a few bakeries, each featured a cupcake, cake balls and other sweet treats like macarons. My personal affinity is towards the macaron, the power-packed tiny sweet sandwich made from meringue.

Still, the cupcake wins out in sales every time.  Perhaps it’s the portability lift, or the fact that they can be decorated so adorably. Regardless, the cupcake is pastry master.

One of our favorites is a new entry in the cupcake world made by the ladies at Zen Baking Company in Deep Ellum. If you are an avid craveDFW reader, you have seen that name mentioned a few times. They were also featured on the Cooking Channel, and sell their cake balls at Central Market and Market Street.

Word is now that Zen has entered the cupcake wars. Lock and load.

“These are not going to be your ordinary vanilla cupcakes, these will be our special signature cupcakes. Oink is our chocolate bacon cupcake that is decorated with more bacon. We also have one called Green with Envy which is made with green tea. We will have flavors you cannot get anywhere else in Dallas like passion fruit.  It’s combining Asian flavors with your day-to-day flavors as well,” said co-owner Chonnie Richey.

Look for these new flavors now at Zen.
