The Search for the World Class Gulf Oyster

The Grand Central Oyster Bar and Restaurant in New York City, putatively the world’s best oyster bar, refuses to serve Gulf Oysters. “Not high enough quality” as they would have it. Robb Walsh, author of Sex, Death and Oysters, says that Gulf coast oysters can be world class, providing you buy them at the right time and from the right source. The right time is the first quarter of the year, according to Walsh, so I headed down Galveston way to see what I could find. Continue reading

National Oyster Day, is August 5th. We found out that at Oceanaire in the Galleria you will get Chef’s Choice East Coast Cold Water Oysters for $1 each  from 5pm to close in the dining room and at the bar.

Dollar Oyster Domination; Sunday Nights at TJ’s

Ripped straight from TJ’s Fresh Seafood Market’s Sunday night Facebook post, dollar oyster domination kicked off last night to a full house. The discounts on oysters and fish tacos began at 8:30, but many arrived early, creating a buzz of excitement amidst the seafood enthusiasts. The mix of oysters included Blue Point, Barnstables and owner, Jon Alexis’ favorite, Fisher’s Island. He relayed how thankful he is to have them here since most are gobbled up by big name restaurants in the North East. He raved about the clean, sweet and briny notes of the Fisher’s Island oyster.    Continue reading
