Market Report: Shed Two Expansions

by Steven Doyle

It is always a good thing to take a stroll through Shed Two at the Dallas Farmers Market. You never know what you might encounter in the building that hosts many prepared foods. This past weekend proves that point well.

At first glance you will find that Natsumi has taken leave, so you are no longer able to sample their fine gelatos. However we learned that Ruth Ann and Bill Glover who operate Fudgemakers, also located in Shed Two, purchased the Natsumi equipment and will be taking a class in New York to learn the finer points of gelato making. They have already begun their build out next to their current business and will soon add gelato to their line up of sweets.

Another new vendor has popped up recently selling fresh seafood that is brought in daily from the Gulf. Look for very large head-on shrimp and fresh catch selections. The shop is called Becker Bay Seafood and is owned by Patrick becker.

We ran across a fairly new vendor, Just Pie owned by Shannon Arnold Foltz who basically sells – just pie. Small whole pies will run an even $5, while larger pies go for $16. She has another pie shop in West Tawakoni, Texas.

We also bumped into Bob Zayus who will soon open Cheese Peddlers and focus on Texas made cheeses that use organic milks and vegetable rennet. For Bob this is a second career, and recently took an extensive class on the finer points of cheeses.

“I have been speaking with many local dairies and cheese makers and should have a nice line up of products,” said Zayus.  Look for the cheese shop to open sometime in March.

Current vendor Old World Sausage Company has experienced high traffic and is expanding their operation as well. We spoke with  owners Al and Adrianne Capua and they are putting in another case across the aisle from their current deli where they will sell just frozen items and meats to take home. This will ease some of their space constraints they are currently experiencing.

Although we were not able to confirm with the market there is also talks of a French-style bistro and a Cajun restaurant moving in very soon.

You can still find many of your favorites in Shed Two including La Popular and the ever exciting Pecan Lodge. During our weekend visit we visited Pecan Lodge mid-afternoon and they were pretty well wiped clean of most menu items, but oddly found that they had a few orders remaining of burnt ends which they have become so famous for.
