From 9 a.m. – 11 Saturday, June 16, shoppers at the Dallas Farmers Market can sample inventive ice cream, sorbet and gelato recipes made from the freshest, local fruit, nuts and herbs at the 6th Annual Mama Ida’s Ice Cream Social.
Held in the Dallas Farmers Market Plaza, local culinary students and participants of the nutrition and culinary arts program at the Dallas County Youth Village, taught by local chefs Chad Houser (Parigi), Jeffrey Hobbs (Sissy’s Southern Kitchen) and foodie Yvaun Olsen (Chef’s Produce Co.), will expand on past flavors like Peach Caramel Swirl ice cream, Watermelon Ginger Thyme sorbet and Pink Lemonade gelato.
For five dollars, (free to Dallas Farmers Market Friends members), shoppers will receive a spoon to taste each and every chilly dessert and cast a vote for their favorite. The ice cream social ‘Public Choice’ winners will be awarded $250 for first place, $150 for second place and $75 for third.
Named in honor of Dallas Farmers Market Friends (DFMF) founder, Ida Papert, the competition is designed to highlight the Dallas Farmers Market’s ripe, summer produce and to inspire creativity in using it. Using fresh ingredients from local vendors to create the delicious concoctions, herbs and fruits are provided by area farmers like Lemley’s Produce & Plants (Canton), and Dallas-based distributor, Chef’s Produce Co. for each unique recipe.
Sponsored by the Dallas Farmers Market Friends and the Dallas Farmers Market. For more information, please go to: http://www.dfmfriends.org. The Dallas Farmers Market is located at 1010 South Pearl Expressway in downtown Dallas.
