Mahjong’s Modern Revival at Dallas’ Newest Luxury Gem, Hôtel Swexan

As more people in their 20s and 30s seek meaningful, offline connections, classic games like chess, backgammon, and mahjong are making a quiet comeback. Just in time for Lunar New Year on January 29th, Hôtel Swexan is embracing this renewed interest with The Mahjong Line, offering a fresh take on the game. Hosted in Babou’s Library, a warm and inviting space designed for connection, the event invites guests to step away from the digital world and enjoy the experience of learning and playing mahjong in a setting of understated elegance.

Led by Clara Sherman, a skilled mahjong teacher and proud Texan, Tiles & Tales: Mahj in the Library is designed for an intimate group of just eight participants. The small format ensures a personalized experience, with beautifully crafted tiles and mats inspired by the hotel’s distinctive design and rich tones, creating a seamless blend of the game with the ambiance of the space.

Event Details:

  • When: Starting January 8th, from 7–9 PM (one Wednesday evening each month)
  • Price: $50 per person
  • Includes:
    • A guided introduction to mahjong, exploring its history and cultural significance.
