Lounge Here Turns Chicken Fried Steak Into a Dinner and a Brunch Dish

Lounge Here hides behind an unmarked strip center on Garland Road, the kind of exterior that gives away nothing about what’s happening inside. Walk through the door and the room drops you into a retro cocktail lounge, all plush banquettes, moody lighting and a mural by Rainer Judd, daughter of artist Donald Judd. Owner Julie Doyle, known around Dallas for co-founding Tripping Daisy and The Polyphonic Spree and running Good Records next door, built the place to feel like a different decade entirely. The kitchen backs that ambition up with some of the more serious Southern cooking in East Dallas.

Start with the chicken fried steak, because that’s the dish this menu is built around. At dinner, it’s the Chicken Fried Akaushi Ribeye, a cut most kitchens would treat as too good to bread and fry, hand-battered and finished under duck fat gravy that adds a depth plain pan gravy can’t match. At brunch, the kitchen runs a different version entirely: the Chicken Fried Steak Stack, a panko-crusted Texas ribeye layered over Texas toast with a fried egg on top, duck fat gravy poured over the whole plate. Two different times of day, two different builds, and both take the dish somewhere well past the standard cafe version without losing what makes chicken fried steak worth ordering in the first place.

The rest of the menu earns its keep around that centerpiece. Deviled Eggs come with a kick of heat built in, and the Pimento Cheese arrives with house-made crackers, both built for a table to share before the entrees land. Shrimp and Grits run rich and well-seasoned, closer to a full meal than an appetizer. Fried Chicken Confit shows up on more than one regular’s order, poached slow before it’s fried, and the sides do real work too: Fried Cauliflower Rice and Soy Chili-Glazed Brussels Sprouts both hold their own against entrees twice their size.

On the drink side, the cocktail list changes with the seasons, built by a rotating group of some of Dallas’s better-known bartenders, but one name keeps coming up from regulars: the La Vie En Rose, a standing recommendation for anyone who hasn’t been before. For anyone skipping alcohol, the mocktail list holds its own too, with Memaw’s Apple Pie and the Paisley Daisy both built with the same care as anything coming off the full bar. Lounge Here also runs a standing bit worth knowing about before a visit: hand over your phone for the night and the table gets a bottle of wine on the house, no strings attached beyond actually talking to whoever you came with.

Lounge Here is at 9028 Garland Road in East Dallas, next door to Good Records. It’s easy to miss from the street and worth looking for anyway.
