Dallas College Expands Food Pantry Efforts Amid SNAP Benefit Disruptions and Government Shutdown

In response to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown and the resulting suspension of SNAP benefits, Dallas College is stepping up to support local families by hosting two emergency food pantries on Saturday, November 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The effort comes through a partnership between Dallas College and the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB), expanding on the college’s existing monthly drive-thru pantry program that rotates between campuses. These extra pantry days are open to everyone—no ID required—and will operate at two locations:

Tarrant Area Food Bank North to Host Holiday Mobile Distribution in Denton County

As the holidays approach and SNAP uncertainty, the Tarrant Area Food Bank North is stepping up to make sure no family in Denton County goes hungry. On Tuesday, November 4, the organization will host a Holiday Mega Mobile Distribution at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex, 1500 Long Road in Denton, offering groceries and essential food items to more than 1,000 families while supplies last. The distribution will take place from 10 a.m. to noon, providing a vital lifeline for families feeling the strain of rising costs and recent challenges such as the federal shutdown and temporary pause in SNAP benefits.

Corporations and Restaurants Help with SNAP Cut-Offs in North Texas

Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, SNAP benefits in Texas are facing a major interruption. The USDA has warned that if the shutdown persists, the program will run out of funds and November benefit payments may not be issued. In Texas alone, roughly 3.5 million residents — including 1.7 million children — could lose access to about $614 million in monthly SNAP benefits, leaving households that rely on an average of $379 per month per household struggling to put food on the table. This disruption threatens food security for working-class families, children, seniors, and other vulnerable residents, prompting nonprofits and community organizations to prepare for unprecedented demand.
