Meet the Bento!

The bento box is said to date back to the fifth century and basically is a packed luncheon of fruit, meat or fish, rice and other tasty nuggets. These complete meals were often sent to work or school, and even sold at intermissions at the theater. In more recent times the bento has become a bit more elaborate and met with much skill for the housewife to not only to feed her children, but also a source of entertainment. Beautifully designed characters fashioned from pieces of sushi become anime characters, and tiny animals that encourage their brood to dine happily.

The bento box can be found in many Japanese restaurants today and offered as a quick meal fix for the hungry worker. Dallas has many restaurants serving these and we have a short list of a few favorites below. Please offer your favorites!   Continue reading

Steel Announces Sparkling Social and Camp Sushi

Steel has had plenty of exciting news of late with the addition of TJ Lengnick and general manager Brad Crouch. Today they send word of a unique Sparkling Social featuring tastings of four different styles of bubbles including Cava, Prosecco, California bubbles and French Champagne.

Attendees will be able to taste the differences along with sushi bites with each pairing. This fun event takes place Thursday, October 1st from 6 to 8pm. You may drop in at any time with your friends and family and enjoy the full experience. The cost is $25 per person.   Continue reading

TJ Lengnick Named Exec Chef at Steel

Chef TJ Lengnick has been named executive chef of Steel, another cog in the wheel of updates for the 15-year old restaurant that still shines bright. Lengnick has a terrific Dallas restaurant history working at Jasper’s in Plano, as well as Pappa’s Brothers Steakhouse, Nana Grill, Shinsei and was the opening chef de cuisine at Whiskey Cake.  The chef is an avid Steelers fan (we won’t hold that against him) and graduated from New England Culinary Institute. Other proud graduates from New England include Alton Brown, and local chef wunderkind Abraham Salum.   Continue reading

Steel is Offering Sushi and Cocktail Classes

This is super exciting. Steel is offering sushi classes where you learn to make your own at home. There are two upcoming classes, one for children on July 18th, and the other for adults on the 25th a week later. Both classes start at 4pm. The classes include everything you will need to know, and all the supplies at individual stations that have a sushi mat, rice and fish. Adults and teens will be cutting their own, whereas the younger folks will have more hands on assistance.  Continue reading
