The Best Train Trip in America Right Now Runs Through the Rocky Mountains and Utah’s Red Rocks

There is a version of this country that you cannot see from a highway or a plane window. The Colorado River from inside Glenwood Canyon, where the walls rise 1,300 feet on both sides and the train tracks run so close to the water that you could almost reach out and touch it. The red sandstone formations of the Utah desert, layered and ancient, lit differently at every hour of the day. The Book Cliffs stretching across the horizon east of Moab, a geological formation so long and flat that from the train window it looks like the edge of something. These are views that were built for rail travel and that nothing else quite delivers.

All Aboard: Grapevine’s Jazz Wine Train Date Night

Some evenings just have a built-in story to tell. The Jazz Wine Train in Grapevine is one of those nights — the kind where you arrive slightly dressed up, leave a little flushed, and find yourself already thinking about when you can come back.

The premise is simple and wonderful. You and your person settle into a 100-year-old Victorian rail coach, a glass of Texas wine in hand, live jazz filling the air, the Texas night sliding past the windows. For two hours, nothing needs your attention except the music and what’s in your glass.

Amtrak Offers a Beautiful Experience from FW to Chicago to LA

Today we board Amtrak Fort Worth for a planned trip to Los Angeles by way Chicago. We selected a stop in Chicago for a few reasons. First, we had the time, train trips are not for those seeking a fast mode of transportation, opting for views and experiences. Also, the views taken in from Chicago are glorious as you take on the Rockies with the breath-taking scenes. And it is never a bad idea to take a few days to enjoy all that Chicago offers from a Cubs game to some of the best restaurants in America.
