Truluck’s Stone Crab Takedown

stonecrabby Steven Doyle

I recently wrote about the marvel that is the stone crab and all of its glory, such as heavy sustainability, deliciously sweet and dense claw meat, and it’s short fishing season which ends May 15th.

I also wrote about the hot deal that Truluck’s has on their stone crab each Monday where the claws are $79 for as many as you care to enjoy. In full disclosure I have been to truluck’s many times but never participated in the crab feast. It sounded exactly like something that would thrill me. I checked into Truluck’s last evening and guess what? It thrilled me.  Continue reading

The Unlimited Stone Crab Feast At Trulucks Worth It’s Weight In Crab

trulucks.jpgby Steven Doyle

Crab season, specifically stone crab season, is like Christmas around the Crave Offices. Stone Crab is food of the gods. And the best catch is at Truluck’s. This is what they do well.

The Stone Crab is extremely sustainable, and the fisherman only take one claw which is detachable. The crab quickly grows a new one. Those claws pack a mean punch too, able to crush up to 19,000 pounds per square inch.  Stone Crab are prolific too, laying up to a million eggs at a time. Continue reading

Truluck’s Hosts Poggio Al Tesoro

marissa-allegriniby Charles Duran

Truluck’s and Poggio Al Tesoro of Allegrini Estates hosted an intimate luncheon Thursday featuring wines from Tuscany’s Bolgheri region.  Until the production of Sassicaia, Bolgheri was a relatively anonymous wine producing community that focused primarily on white wines and rosés.  Prior to seating the guests enjoyed a 2014 Solosole, a crisp and mineral dense white made of 100% Vermentio grapes.

Chef Eric Ho served some of Truluck’s classics including a chilled Shellfish Platter, Hothouse Tomato Salad, and choice of Hawaiian Ahi Tuna or Filet Mignon.  Dishes were accompanied by Poggio La Grola 2012, Poggio al Tesoro Sondraia 2011, and  Allegrini Palazzo del Torre 2013, which were served as a flight.  The grand finale was the chocolate cake paired with Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella 2012.   Continue reading

Restaurant Openings This Week

luscherby Steven Doyle

There are a few key restaurant openings this week that you should take note about. There are several.

Luscher’s Red Hots is located in Deep Ellum at 2653 Commerce, and will, of course, feature those amazing dogs hand crafted by Brian Luscher, owner of The Grape on Greenville. This long awaited hot spot also serves up shaved Wagyu beef Italian sandwiches (the latest rage in Dallas), Greek gyros, roasted pork and gairdinera sandwiches served with natural gravy, and the beloved “Uncle Jimmy” which is a creation of Luscher’s made with roasted pork and sweet and hot Italian sausage.    Continue reading
