The Original Mexican Eats Café: A Fort Worth Icon

The Original Mexican Eats Café, affectionately known as “The Original,” has served as a cornerstone of Fort Worth dining since 1926. As the city’s oldest restaurant, it built its reputation on authentic Tex-Mex flavors, comforting family recipes, and a warm, nostalgic atmosphere that welcomes generations of loyal patrons.

Founded by Lola San Miguel Piñeda and her husband Gerónimo Piñeda, the café originally opened in Waco before settling on Camp Bowie Boulevard in 1930. Over the decades, it grew from a modest eatery into a culinary institution, known just as much for its hospitality as its food.

At the heart of The Original’s appeal is its classic menu, rich with heritage. The famed “Roosevelt Special,” created to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s visit in 1936, features a cheese enchilada topped with hearty chili, a crunchy beef taco, and a bean chalupa. It remains a top seller to this day. The enchiladas are rolled by hand, generously filled with cheese or seasoned beef, and bathed in savory red chili sauce—a signature flavor of the house.

Other staples include tamales wrapped in corn husks, stuffed with tender pork or cheese and jalapeños, and topped with a drizzle of chili con carne. The chili rellenos—poblano peppers filled with gooey cheese, lightly battered, and fried until golden—deliver a smoky heat balanced by rich, cheesy comfort.

No Tex-Mex experience would be complete without tacos, and The Original delivers in spades. Guests rave about crispy beef tacos, soft chicken fajita tacos, and a special revival of puffy tacos—light, airy shells named “Berta’s Puffy Tacos” after longtime kitchen manager Berta Miranda. These puffy delights are fried fresh and stuffed with savory fillings like spiced ground beef, lettuce, tomato, and cheese.

The café also offers hearty combination plates, homemade guacamole, fresh flour tortillas, and rich refried beans slow-cooked to perfection. Many guests came just for the queso dip—melty, spiced cheese served bubbling hot with a side of fresh tortilla chips.

To accompany the food, diners enjoy traditional margaritas—shaken, frozen, or flavored—as well as Mexican beers, micheladas, and sweet aguas frescas. The drinks menu perfectly complements the rich, bold flavors of the food, making it a go-to destination for everything from weekday dinners to festive celebrations.

In 1999, Robert L. Self became the owner and remains committed to preserving the café’s traditions while keeping the kitchen rooted in its original recipes. Even after the closure of its iconic Camp Bowie location in 2023, The Original’s legacy lives on at The Original del Norte on North Main Street, where longtime fans and new visitors continue to enjoy the same flavors.

For nearly 100 years, The Original Mexican Eats Café has been more than just a restaurant—it’s a treasured piece of Fort Worth’s history and a true celebration of Tex-Mex cuisine.
