MUTTS Canine Cantina Shutters

On Monday, June 29, FreeRange Concepts announced the permanent closure of every MUTTS location — the flagship Uptown Dallas spot at 2889 Cityplace West Boulevard, the Fort Worth location at The Shops at Clearfork, the Allen location, and the Austin franchise. The announcement came via social media with no advance warning. Business had been running as usual the weekend before the post went up.

“After many years of wagging tails, muddy paws, and friendships formed at the water bowl, today we’re permanently closing our MUTTS Dallas and Clearfork locations, effective immediately,” the company wrote today. “MUTTS has been more than a dog park — it’s been a community, and we’re incredibly grateful to every member, guest, and pup who made it special.”

The concept opened in Uptown in 2013, combining an off-leash dog park with a full bar and restaurant in a way that hadn’t been tried at scale before. Fort Worth followed in 2018, Allen in 2021, Austin in 2022. At its peak, MUTTS operated more than a dozen locations nationally and was widely credited with creating the dog park bar category. The Uptown location became one of the most reliably packed outdoor spaces in Dallas — yellow benches, cold beer, dogs tearing around the park while their owners ran tabs.

FreeRange Concepts, founded in 2011 by Josh Sepkowitz and Kyle Noonan The closure was about refocusing on its other brands — Bowl & Barrel, The Rustic, Joe Leo Fine Tex Mex, and The General Public. After nearly 15 years, they had a great run with Mutts in Dallas and Fort Worth, and it’s time to shift our focus on other brands.

Members with active subscriptions were directed to reach out at muttsmembers@freerangeconcepts.com for information on their accounts. The company noted that dog-friendly patios at The Rustic and Joe Leo remain open in Dallas for guests who want to bring their pups.

The Uptown location ran for thirteen years. The community it built outlasted most of the bars that opened around it in 2013. That’s worth acknowledging on the way out.
