by Steven Doyle

There is something inviting about shared plates that springs the convivial spirit that emanates through out the passages of Samar located on downtown’s Ross Avenue. The friendly banter between chef and guest, the knowing nods from the line cooks in the most open kitchen in Dallas and the spot on friendly service makes this unusual restaurant inviting with a charge that beckons a repeat visit.   Continue reading

Celebrate Tomatina at Samar

by Steven Doyle

The last Wednesday of August in the Valencia town of Buñol in Spain they hold a festival each year that started in 1944 as a small rivalry discouraged by police, but since the 1950’s has been openly accepted. You may have seen photographs of Tomatina, the largest tomato fight in the world.

Each year the tomato fight swells to larger proportions as the local government began trucking in low quality tomatoes grown for the festival in the 1980’s, replacing the homegrown tomatoes gathered by the people of Buñol.   Continue reading

Dallas Mavericks Beat the Heat

by Steven Doyle

Unless you were locked in a wine cellar all evening, and how could that possibly suck, you by now know that the Mavericks ripped the 2011 NBA Finals from Miami last night. As the prior post indicated I was at the Taste of the Nation event at Stephan Pyles.

During a spirited live auction that raised thousands of dollars to defeat hunger in North Texas the Mavericks were close to a victory. The auctioneer caved into the madness that was swelling in the Pyles bar as at least 100 people filled the area. Next to me was a screaming Dan Landsberg who was employed as executive chef at SP back in 2006 for game 6 when the Mavs lost and he refused to allow that to happen again.  Continue reading

Chef Pyles in Zihuatanejo

by Stephan Pyles

It was September of 1998 and I was in Cuernavaca, Mexico staying at Las Mananitas where I was taking an immersion Spanish class for two weeks. I had a free weekend and decided to fly to Zihuatanejo to check out a new hotel that a reputable travel magazine called Mexico’s most romantic, Casa Que Canta. The hotel was just as it was described and thus begun my love affair with the twin cities of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. Continue reading
