Have a Safe and Happy St Pats

by Crave Staff

As we get ready for the weekend we wish to thank you for checking out our little website this week.  We considered throwing out a list of places to medicate your liver for  St Pats, but there are plenty of options and we want to get started in on the fun ourselves right away.  We have a crew of camera folks hitting the streets starting tonight, so if you see a craveDFW photog be sure to look extra inebriated.

Be safe and enjoy one of our favorite holidays of the year.  May the hinges of our friendship never grow rusty.

Fairmont Springs Their Menu

by Steven Doyle   photos by  Jennifer Ohlson

We have written about chef Andre Natera at the Fairmont Hotel numerous times and this man deserves all the accolades that we could possibly bestow on one chef. He has this fun terrace garden that is sprawling around the pool area. Natera has a green house that is set up for more than just show. He also keeps bees that are maintained by the Texas Honeybee Guild.    Continue reading

First Look: Spread Eagle Saloon

by Steven Doyle

I  stopped in the new Spread Eagle Saloon last night after several attempts in the past to try their food. (Note to self: there are only a few items sold on Sunday and Monday when the cook is off. Mostly fried cheese.) At first glance the bar seems a bit sparse in décor, but that is actually a good thing. No odd vintage bicycles or bird cages dangling from the ceiling in a false attempt to give the bar character. This is a neighborhood pub that offers decent beer at a good price and also has a short menu to feed the hungry soul.     Continue reading

Sampling Wild Salsa’s Tacos Late Night

by Steven Doyle

Mentally grazing the interesting menu at Wild Salsa you notice a few interesting tamales, stacked enchiladas ala New Mexico and a hard core lamb shank barbacoa for $29. Relegated to the end of the menu, just before the requisite tres leches cake, you see a fine listing of tacos.

Although a bit pricey, what would you expect for a chef driven taco located in a beautiful building downtown. Advantage: all the taqueria located in gas stations. But this isn’t Texaco, and those aren’t your average tacos. These smack of chef Kelly Hightower’s ability to refine, as he did once before at Nova in Oak Cliff.    Continue reading

Look What I Ate At Mad Hatters

by Steven Doyle

I stopped in at Mad Hatters yesterday for a late lunch after spotting their daily special listed on their Facebook wall. I am a sucker for soft shell crabs and they dangled this beast  before me like the mad men they are, so I flew across town at break-neck speeds.  I am totally happy that I did.  Continue reading

First Look: Chop House Burger

by Steven Doyle

I would recognize that bun anywhere. The soft but toasty brioche smacks of the flavorful Empire Bakery as any decent chef-driven burger should.  I did a late night drop in to take a bite out of the new Chop House Burger which just opened but a few days ago. I was downtown most of yesterday afternoon, but a drive-by made me skittish with the hoards of people pouring out of the new burger joint.    Continue reading

Occupy North Pole at Santa Rampage

by Steven Doyle   photo by Christi Beard

One of our contributors and photographers Christi Beard was on the scene at this past weekend’s Santa Rampage, the combination pub crawl and Santa flash mob event that started at Lee Harvey’s and made its way slowly through out the day to Deep Ellum.

Time Magazine’s Person of the Year is the protestor, and Rampage had their share of them. SWAT Santa made sure the crowd of Occupy North Pole protesters didn’t get out of hand by using a preemptive candy cane scented pepper spray on them to maintain crowd control and presumably to hoard more cookies for himself.
