This past weekend White Rock Lake was all abuzz with 100-year anniversary action. Plenty of family-friendly fun could be found and of course we were there for the food, There was certainly no shortage of outings, picnics and fun.
For us seeing the host of chefs out on a Sunday afternoon means only one thing: great groceries on the loose.
For this event hosted by Highland Park Cafeteria, Brian Luscher from The Grape was called on to bring in a few of his friends, and the man pulled out all the stops. There this past Sunday we saw Randall Copeland from Restaurant Ava, the Fourton’s from Pecan Lodge, Janice Provost from Parigi, Hollie Dorethy the beautiful pastry and personal chef who made an appearance on Master Chef, Marc Cassel, and RedFork’s Jeff Harris all making a component to fill eager plates at the picnic.
Even though we were a bit late to the party (we also went to brunch at ZaZa) there was plenty of food around including the legendary Pecan Lodge burnt ends and sliced brisket. Jeff Harris threw down some incredible Caprino Royale goat cheese and heirloom tomato salad.
Marc Cassel wowed us with a vegetarian potato salad. We thought to ask him about his new East Dallas restaurant and he assured us it was in the works.
Miss Hollie made many of her signature desserts for the hungry crowd including white chocolate baklava and bacon caramel corn. She is currently working on a cookbook, but most importantly she shared her more current plans for this week to sprawl languidly on a beach and work on her tan.
Ben E. Keith had the real party plans bringing the beer and wine. We can always count on them to liven up most any party.
The picnic was held to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the lake but also to raise a load of funds for the American Red Cross which has been particularly burdened this past Spring with all the disasters sprawled across the Plains.
Here comes the classic ending to any story like this: A great time was had by all.
That brisket!
That brisket was pretty amazing!
