New Foods at the State Fair

The doors are about to open at the State Fair of Texas and we will be in the Creative Arts Building hosting all the celebrity chefs that will demo every day during the Fair. We hope to bring you some great interviews of the chefs, and also interesting behind the scenes stories from the fairgrounds.

With all the fried goodies it will be difficult to stave off temptation, but we will have access to the employees commissary for our daily meals if we so choose. This should be fun because this is where most of the carnies dine.

For those not wanting to dine with the carnies we have a list of all the new treats to sample during this year’s Fair.   

Randall Copeland promises he will be cooking at least one day at the Fair

Deep Fried Biscuits and Gravy located at the Belgium waffle stand on Grand Avenue.

Texas Steak Cone located at Benz Foods on Cotton Bowl Plaza and is a giant tortilla cone stuffed with mixed beans, steak, chicken, pico, shredded cheese and sour cream. No mention of using a fryer on this one.

Heavenly Deep Fried Brownie will crate bite-sized brownie bites battered and fried. Find these folks in two places, in the Tower Building and on Grand Avenue at Rancheros Fajitas.

Fried Naked Tamales are fresh tamales dipped in egg wash and rolled in masa harina then… deep fried. Find these at Ruth’s Tamales on Cotton Bowl Plaza and MLK Bld across from the coliseum.

Deep Fried Southern Hospitality is a combination of pork, fresh collard greens and cornbread that is shaped into a cone and deep fried. These are also located at Ruth’s Tamales.

Double Fried Chicken Breast Taco is a fried hand-breaded chicken breast wrapped and refried in a tortilla. Dipping sauces include cream gravy or jalapeno ranch. Find this one in the Grand Place Building and on MLK next to the Texas Star.

Praline Sweet Potato Popper are mashed swee poatatoes blended with brown sugar, brandy, orange zest, chopped pecan, ginger and marshmallows, then dipped in batter and fried. Find this one at the Pizza and Nacho Stand on Cotton Bowl Plaza.

Fernie’s Deep Fried Whole Lotta Chocolatta is made with two slices of Italian bread stuffed with dark chocolate, dipped in egg wash, coated with bread crumbs and deep fried. This is served with chocolate drizzled freshly made potato chips and served with a dollop of chocolate whipped cream. They also offer a glass of chocolate wine to go with this treat. Find this concoction at the Embarcadero Building on Admiral Nimitz Circle.

Fried Pecan Caramel Candy is boasted as a one-of-a-kind made with flattened caramel squares dipped in pecan chocolate batter and deep fried served with a buttery caramel sauce. Located at Berrera’s on the Fun Way in front of the Lost Children’s Shelter.
