Fred’s Texas Cafe has been feeding Fort Worth since 1978, back when the restaurant was a scrappy outpost in a then-overlooked stretch of West Seventh, long before that part of town turned into Artisan Circle and everything around it got expensive. Forty-eight years later, the burger joint that built its reputation on Fred Burgers and ice-cold schooners is celebrating two birthdays at once, and it’s giving Crowley the gift.
On Friday, July 4, Fred’s Texas Cafe in Crowley will give away 250 free Fred Burgers starting at opening, while supplies last. It’s a double celebration — America turns 250 this year, and Fred’s turns 48 — and the timing isn’t an accident. The Crowley location, which opened in January 2026, is the first Fred’s has ever operated outside Fort Worth city limits in nearly half a century of business. Friday’s giveaway is the restaurant’s way of saying thank you to a town that showed up for it from day one.
The mechanics are simple. The first 250 guests through the door get one free Fred Burger, limit one per person, while supplies last. Cheese, fries, drinks, and additional toppings aren’t included — bring a little cash if you want the full meal. It’s first come, first served, so the early crowd is going to eat well and the late crowd is going to eat at the counter like everyone else.
Fred’s has also brought in a local partner for the occasion. Johnny’s Fireworks is giving away 250 free packs of firecrackers to the first 100 guests who mention co-owner Johnathan Cook’s promotional video — ask at the counter if you’re not sure how that works. Cook will be on site for the day, which means there’s a decent chance you’ll get to celebrate the partnership with the man himself rather than just hear about it secondhand.
If you’ve never been to Fred’s Crowley, the building itself is worth the trip on its own. The space at 101 N. Magnolia Street dates back to 1887, when it opened as the Hays Brothers General Store and Post Office. It became the Clover Farm Store in 1919, was rebuilt in brick in 1925, and ran as Legg’s Super Saver from the late 1950s through the mid-1970s — a meeting spot for the town for generations before Fred’s ever set foot in it. Fred’s preserved the historic bar inside the original brick walls and built the rest of the 6,200-square-foot dining room around it, with seating for 220 guests and a 60-seat covered patio. Crowley Mayor Bill Davis called the building’s transformation a place where guests would “catch glimpses of Crowley’s past within these walls, even as new memories are made around the table.” That’s exactly what’s happening on the Fourth.
Beyond the giveaway, Fred’s is marking the occasion with limited-edition Fred’s Texas Cafe / America’s 250th birthday t-shirts, debuting July 4 and available for purchase at all three Fred’s locations — Crowley, Camp Bowie West, and Western Center — while supplies last.
Fred’s Crowley is open daily from 10:30am to 10:30pm. The free burger giveaway starts at opening on July 4 and runs while supplies last — which, for a town that’s been waiting since 2024 for this restaurant to arrive, probably won’t be long. Get there early.
