Wachu Tacobot Willis? Velvet Taco

by Danielle Leahy    photos by Jacque Manaugh

Look at these pictures. Just look at them. They say a picture is worth a thousands words but in the case of Velvet Taco only 6 are needed:  Best.Gourmet.Tacos.In.Dallas.Period.

Velvet Taco has only been open a few short weeks in Dallas, located in the old Church’s Chicken on Henderson and 75 but is already making major waves in Dallas’ emerging Gourmet Taco scene. With over 20 different tacos on the menu broken down in to 6 categories (chicken, veggie, pork, beef, fish, and egg) and an emphasis on fresh, local produce these tacos are have been hand crafted from the tortilla up. In fact, all of the tortillas at Velvet Taco are hand made in house.     Continue reading

Wachu Tacobot Willis? Macho Nacho

by Danielle Leahy

Tacos are not known for being the healthiest item in the World. This is a common Tacobot lament when viewing another menu full of meat, cheese, and not much else. Thank the Salsa Gods for places like Macho Nacho on Cedar Springs bringing a refreshing and healthier twist to our traditional Tex-Mex favorites. Specializing in locally -sourced produce the menu at Macho Nacho is sure to satisfy a taco-lovers taste without sacrificing all those hard-earned hours in the gym.

Located in the old Hunky’s Hamburgers spot at the corner of Cedar Springs and Throckmorton the small but comfortable space is decked out in crisp white, dark chocolates, and bright orange. Plush enough to be mistake for an upscale coffee lounge or boutique bar, the ample patio more than doubles the seating of the inside.  Continue reading

Whachu Tacobot Willis? Tortas La Hechizera

by Danielle Leahy   photos by Jacque Manaugh

Tortas La Hechizera on Maple is the kind of undiscovered gem that makes true “Street Taco” believers out of people. Located on Maple at Inwood this small building hides a delightfully cheery and open interior, despite it’s “hole in the wall” facade. The sparkling clean dining room and mouth watering professional photos of the food on display are more reminiscent of modern day fast food chain than your typical taco stand.

The menu at La Herchizera is vast. They have tacos, tortas, tostados, huaraches, tlacoyos, and pambazos just to name a few. With over 12 meats to choose from ranging from hotdog to cow hoof there is not much you CAN’T get at La Herchizera. The tacos we ordered were of good size, hearty on the meat, with a huge pile of cilantro and onions on the side.   Continue reading

Wachu Tacobot Willis? La Grange

La Grange changes their menu and throws down the gauntlet

You know when you eat something so wonderful, so perfect, it forever changes how you feel about an entire category of food? Well La Grange’s new Crab Claw “Swanky Taco” just knocked the taco-ball out of the park. It’s been almost 36 hrs since I had my last one and I haven’t really been able to focus on much since other than then thoughts of succulent crab chunks, sweet roasted corn, crunchy red cabbage, and creamy avocado all topped in their amazing Peach Chipotle. Must. Have. More. Crab tacos.   Continue reading

Floating the River After 30

Your guide to a post-college river party in New Braunfels

by Danielle Leahy

Ahh, the college river/road trip. I remember it fondly: great friends, laughing for days, the sun on your back and the river beneath you, drinking too much and sleeping to little. Crowded, smelly cars and waking up on cheap motel floors stuffed 6 to a room made for 2… Err… HOLD UP. Actually, there was a lot of room for improvement in those early adult, cash strapped, college days. Maybe there are some lessons to be learned and improvements to be made to our annual Summer Road Trip now that the majority of us have rounded the corner on 30?

Yea, I thought so too.  Continue reading
