First Look: Swig

by Danielle Leahy

Opening up in the old Park space  on Henderson, Swig bills itself as a Beer-garden and Speakeasy in combination with its bar the Gin Mill, located in the former Bar Celine spot in back. With much of the interior remaining the same Henderson Ave residents will feel right at home in the space now owned by the guys behind Capital Pub.

Swig boasts an impressive beer menu divided by country of origin as well as a very nice selection of Gins, Scotches, Whiskeys, and Bourbons in addition to its completely revamped menu.   Continue reading

Shade and Pussycat Lounge First Casualties of SUP

by Danielle Leahy

Looks like the first victims of Angela Hunt’s new Greenville Ave Planned Development District have been identified. Two long time Greenville Ave establishments Shade and Pussy Cat Lounge have both closed this week due to a combination of decreasing sales and difficulties with the Special Use Permits (SUP) process. This comes on the heels of the new 12pm closing hours starting tonight, for all business without a SUP as well as this week’s news that Southbound Greenville Avenue between Bell and Alta will be shut down to all traffic from Sept 26th-Nov 26th.  Continue reading

Whachu Tacobot Willis? Good2Go

by Danielle Leahy    photos by Jacque Manaugh

Can tacos be Artisan? This question has been rattling around my taco-ladened brain since the Tacobots invaded

Good2Go a few weekends ago. What is above gourmet in the Taco World? How does one classify a taco that goes so far beyond what many consider “specialty” or “restaurant” tacos? Cause whatever that would be is what Good2Go is. Next level stuff. Tacos made by the hands of God a delivered down to mere mortals upon baskets of plastic and aluminum foil.   Continue reading

Wach Tacobot Willis? Chichen Itza

by Danielle Leahy   photos by Jacque Manaugh

La Hacienda Chichen Itza has long been a Greenville Ave staple although it’s often over shadowed by it’s more award winning neighbor, Tacos Y Mas. For the residents of Greenville Ave, this is a tragedy. Not only does Chichen Itza offers a much better quality taco, but with it’s origins as a family run bakery and restaurant Chichen Itza offers a larger selection of traditional Mexican delights on top of the basic street tacos.

With a separate bakery taking up almost equal space in the building, this eatery makes traditional Mexican pastries and desserts on a daily basis. Even at 8pm they still had a nice selection of pan de dulces and various flavored cookies. The cooler behind the pastry case was full of Mexican sodas, juices, and mineral waters with more than one Bot appreciatively signing over the effervescence of their Topo Chico.   Continue reading
