Review The Venue: Three Links in Deep Ellum

3links1by Jon Daniel

Across the street from Trees in Deep Ellum   resides Three Links.

Three Links is co-owned by Oliver Peck (Elm St. Tattoo), Kris Youmans (Transmission Events) and Scott Beggs and recently celebrated their second anniversary bringing an excellent mix of Punk, Metal, Ska, Rockabilly (and anything else that tickles Scott’s fancy)acts to their great sounding and accessible room that features  a roll up door opening onto Elm Street.

Parking near Three Links is covered in our article here  but we did make special mention of the lot across the street behind Trees as one of our favorites. And of course, always consider Lyft instead of driving.  Continue reading

Love the Band, Deal with the Venue: Southside Music Hall

southside1by Jon Daniel

Location

The Southside Music Hall is part of the Gilly’s entertainment complex on Lamar Street just southeast of downtown Dallas. It’s a 15 minute walk (about a ½ mile) from the Omni Hotel, and 23 miles from DFW Airport. Despite what the Gilley’s website says, it is not “three blocks” from the Omni. The venue also includes The Loft which is a smaller venue. I’ll review The Loft at a later date.   Continue reading

Trees In Deep Ellum Brings Vitality To The City

trees3by Jon Daniel

The resurrection of the famous Trees Dallas  by new owners  Clint and Whitney Barlow in 2009 was a sure sign the Deep Ellum’s music scene was on the way back to prominence.  Trees has been bringing local and national acts of virtually every genre to Dallas ever since. Clint’s music industry background focused the renovations on improving the sound, A/C and sight lines without losing the unique character of the building. Trees recently announced that the sound system will be upgraded again, with the new system going live in mid-August. This is the loudest venue in Dallas. Bring earplugs!

Trees was the scene of arguably the most infamous concert in Dallas history, where Kurt Cobain got into a fight with one the bouncers.   Continue reading

How To Enjoy The Kessler Theater

kessler1by Jon Daniel

Built in 1942, The Kessler Theater survived a tornado, fire, and being vacant for over 30 years to become one of the premier small music venues in the US. Originally built as a small movie theater, owner Edwin Cabaniss bought and renovated the property in 2009/2010. Artistic director Jeff Liles books an eclectic mix of bands, many of which rarely perform in a venue as intimate as The Kessler. The Kessler has a reputation among musicians and patrons for amazing sound, thanks to the work of sound engineer Paul Quigg.    Continue reading
