Best Sandwich in Dallas Today

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

One of the absolute best things that I have eaten in months is made by bad-boy chef John Tesar of The Commissary. The Commissary makes a great option for those in the Arts District wanting a late night nosh and is one of the most solid values found in downtown Dallas. There you can find a chef-driven five dollar burger that satisfies and lifts the spirits.

Recently I found an item on Tesar’s special board that I probably would not have necessarily ordered had sommelier Scott Barber not insisted I try the sandwich. He stood next to me and said, “Seriously… order the Pork Belly BLT. Seriously.”  Continue reading

Down the Hatch

by Steven Lindsey   photos by Rod Orta

Next to Christmas, opening day of the State Fair, and that new-car smell, one of my favorite things in the world is Hatch Green Chile Season. It’s a brief time of year when one of the best food-enhancers in the world reaches its peak. From local grocery stores roasting the fiery suckers to restaurants creating hot new menu creations, Hatch Chiles are a thing of culinary beauty.

And Jorge’s in One arts Plaza is keeping things fresh and simple with two new menu items highlighting the pureness that is Hatch. What I wasn’t expecting was a cavalcade of cocktails courtesy of Nacho, the creative genius behind a new era of creativity behind the Jorge’s bar. The drinks just kept coming. And coming. And coming.  Continue reading

Camarena Tequila Brings Free Tacos to DFW

by Steven Doyle

Two undisputed facts about Texans. We love tequila and we love tacos. This makes today’s news of the Camarena Tequila Taco Truck moving into the Dallas area so incredibly sweet. As the truck was making its way into the DFW area, the brand selected to work with the Commissary in One Arts Plaza as their local ambassadors. Almost daily you will find Commissary sous Phillip Vorkoper working the truck at various events across the city including Cowboy’s games, festivals, concerts and such. You will also see chef John Tesar making his brand of tacos in the truck quite a bit.       Continue reading

Tesar Sweeps Extreme Chef

by Steven Doyle

We reported days ago about chef John Tesar of The Commissary  competing in the Food Network Extreme Chef competition, and last night we slipped in the to watch the program at the One Arts Plaza restaurant with the chef.

For those that haven’t heard, he did win the $10,000 prize. He beat out two very competent and competitive chefs in racing across a farm to gather ingredients, milking cows and ultimately cooking with a blow torch and a hack saw.     Continue reading

Free Menu Preview Tonight at Jorges

by John Stuchly

For a restaurant with over 50 years of history to try and reinvent itself is a daunting task, but that is what Jorge’s Tex-Mex Cafe is attempting. Located at One Arts Plaza in the heart of downtown Dallas, a desire to cater to the arts crowd is natural. To better serve a clientele interested in a nouveau take on the traditional Tex-Mex fare, owner Michele Mireles has encouraged her staff to create new dishes and drinks that reflect a 21st century sensibility, while still remaining true to their roots. So come along on a tasting journey 50 years in the making.

The Jorge’s family of restaurants were founded in 1957 in west Texas, and have since spread to five locations in as many cities. Although family run, each owner creates their own vision for their restaurants, with the promise of maintaining the quality and traditions upon which the brand is built.  Continue reading
