Sartori di Verona: A Model for Italian Wine Success

chalk1By Andrew Chalk

This week I had the honor to meet Andrea Sartori, the President of his family’s winery, Sartori di Verona, along with his consulting winemaker Franco Bernabei over a meal with some of their best wines. It was a memorable experience.

chalk2Andrea Sartori is a busy man. As President of Sartori de Verona winery he already has the responsibility of running a family business. However, since he became Managing Director in 1998 his ambition has made his own job even more onerous. He had studied in the United States at Columbia University, producing a more global perspective for the scion of an old-line Veneto wine producer (as well as fluency in English). He doesn’t say he took over the reins of the family winery with an agenda, but events since that date suggest it. That agenda can be summarized as a steady march up the mountain of quality.           Continue reading

Review: A Solid Value Cabernet Sauvignon

IMG_1232by Andrew Chalk

2011 Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon, Reserve, Santiago, Chile is a reserve offering in Concha y Toro’s popularly priced Casillero del Diablo line. Despite its modest $12 price tag it is a solid and immediately enjoyable red wine. The nose is Cabernet fruit and black cherries. The mouth feel is soft with a hint of residual sugar likely reflecting ripe fruit. There is just enough tannic to give it a backbone and a pleasant, long fruit finish.        Continue reading

Q-n-A With Sommelier Ryan Tedder

DSC07467by Steven Doyle

Last evening I caught up with sommelier Ryan Tedder at a thought provoking Italian wine tasting at Bob’s Steakhouse in Plano. I was surprised to see Tedder in the group, but the previous year’s TexSom winner is constantly improving his knowledge, along with a group of fantastic young enthusiasts and sommeliers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

I had not realy seen Tedder since he left FT33 as general manager/ sommelier, and was excited to sit down with him for a few minutes to discuss his most recent work in Dallas.         Continue reading

Hidden Gems of Italy Featured In Pappas Bros. Wine Tasting

IMG_1229by Andrew Chalk

If you put together a “Best Of…” list for Dallas – all the things you would take a foreign visitor (or someone from New York) to see, to show that we don’t ride horses to work or just buy F-150s – then a “World Class Wine Program” award would go to Pappas Bros. Steakhouse. Not only does the cellar have over 2,300 different wines, but the breadth is backed by incredible, balance sheet busting, depth.           Continue reading

Boutique California Winery Presents Their Wines at WinePoste.com

gandovaby Andrew Chalk

Manuel Pires may be angling to be living proof that to make a small fortune in the wine industry you should start with a large one. He has taken the wealth he accumulated as a successful tech. entrepreneur and spent it on 150 acres of prime land on Napa’s famed Pritchard Hill to create Gandona Wines. He also contracts with wunderkind winemaker Philippe Melka to produce just 2,000 cases of prodigious California Cabernet Sauvignon.

Despite being in business only since 2006 (the vines are much older – 20 years total – formerly being part of Long Vineyards) he has already garnered a reputation for quality and being a name to watch. His 2009 Gandona Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 97/100 points by the wine critic, Robert Parker.        Continue reading
