Big Tex Urban Farms Donates More Than 295,000 Servings of Fresh Produce

to Fair Park Community in 2020

The State Fair of Texas is proud to announce that in 2020, Big Tex Urban Farms harvested and donated more than 26,000 pounds of food, which equates to more than 295,000 servings of fresh produce donated to nine organizations in the Fair Park and South Dallas communities. Since the inception of Big Tex Urban Farms in 2016, the State Fair has donated more than 688,000 total servings – bringing us nearly 70% of the way to meeting our million servings mission goal announced in the fall of 2018.

Despite the COVID-19 Pandemic, Big Tex Urban Farms never stopped operating in 2020. In response to the global crisis, the Farms adjusted their harvest and donation procedures to include proper safety protocols so the State Fair could continue to serve the community in this dire time of need. These safety protocols include workers wearing masks and gloves, socially distancing at all times, updating donation procedures to be contactless, and shifting tours of the Farms to be virtual rather than in-person.

bigtex

The State Fair of Texas is not just about the fried food sensations. There is so much more going on, and many assist our community in a large way.

Although the 2015 State Fair of Texas has officially packed up for the year, its success will continue to impact the community long after Big Tex bids his final farewell for the year. Thanks to record participation from loyal fairgoers, the State Fair is breaking new ground with its nonprofit initiatives. Proving to be the most successful year in Fair history, the 2015 event brought big crowds and an even bigger community impact. With the majority of funds going to participating vendors, the Fair generated in excess of $53.6 million in coupon sales for food and rides – an all-time record, making the event the most successful in its 129-year history. DSC09675by Steven Doyle

Labor Day is the official start of the State Fair season in Texas with the announcement of the fried food kings for the year. Yesterday was no disappointment as the media gathered inside the Embarcadero yesterday morning. With cameras loaded and necks stretched we peered into the eyes of each judge as they quietly nibbled the likes of Fried Nutella and Chicken-Fried Meatloaf.

There were eight finalists looking to walk away with the 2013 Big Tex Choice Award for either the Most Creative or Best tasting. Winning this award historically means that you cold expect up to an additional $250,000 in sales for the year – and a plastic replica of Big Tex.  Continue reading
