Balls Hamburgers Closed

balls1by Steven Doyle

Balls Hamburgers at 4343 Northwest Highway has shuttered, marking the final blow to the long-standing local chain of burger restaurants. The founder of Ball’s, Richard Hobrecht (who passed away in 2009, opened his first location in Snider Plaza, but that closed in 2008 when the lease was lost. The Northwest Highway location succumbed to the same fate, but not without a fight.

In 2013 current owner Carol Hobrecht sued for one million dollars, citing problems with an alleged premature new lease that raised the rent by 125 percent, restricted advertising, demanded menu approval, set hours of operation and other grievances.    Continue reading

East Dallas Gem Genaro’s Closed

genaro1by Steven Doyle

Genaro Silva’s namesake restaurant Genaro’s closed yesterday. The restaurateur delivered pretty terrific food dating back to the 1980’s with such restaurants as Genaro’s Tropical, Moctezuma’s and Garmo’s . His latest restaurant served up insanely delicious seafood and Tex Mex with a bent on Yucatan-style food.   Continue reading

SONY DSCby Steven Doyle

Park Tavern, one of the last of the Restaurant America restaurants in Dallas, closed yesterday from what we are told is non-payment of rent. Located at 8166 Park Lane in the Shops of Park Lane, the restaurant offered some unusual takes on typical bar fare, including the “animal tots” which was an early version of Dallas poutine. More recently Central Standard shuttered.  Continue reading

Taj Express Is Closed

tajby Steven Doyle

The southern portion of Dallas, including everything inside our precious loop, is nearly bereft of Indian cuisine. You may call the lone exception of the Vedic cookery at the Krishna temple, Kalachandji’s, but there are precious few Indian restaurants outside of several regions of Dallas. If you have the notion to nosh on naan and tikka masala, you would most likely aim your automobile towards Plano, Richardson or Irving. This makes sense with the heavy Indian population living in those areas, but it is always nice to be able to grab a quick bit of curry for lunch, or even as a late night snack. Dallas now has one less option with the demise of Taj Express which closed its doors late last week.    Continue reading

The Greek at One Arts Plaza hosted its final dinner service on the evening of March 14th. A restaurant concept sharing the same amazing flavors as Ziziki’s Restaurants, The Greek shared an adventuresome menu and edgier décor with patrons dining at One Arts Plaza.

“We are sorry to see The Greek go. What a wonderful restaurant and great team,” said Lucy Burns, Partner, Billingsley Company. “We are however, looking forward to announcing a few new exciting concepts. Some are new to Dallas and others new concepts from established local operators. Stay tuned,” said Burns.  Continue reading

Sapporo Has Closed For Business

kang 165by Steven Doyle

Sapporo Ramen and Sushi in Richardson’s Little China Town on Greenville Avenue has shuttered. In its place is a similar concept with some new items. Look for Oldero (they spelled it out for me on the phone) in its place. The new management say that they will still serve ramen, sushi and other similar items, but have expanded the menu a bit.

No word from super star sushi chef Sean Kang who gave the little restaurant much of its personality. Sean, answer your phone.
