Texas Wines Take a Leading Role at Savor Dallas This Week

wineby Andrew Chalk

Savor Dallas, the largest food and wine event on the Dallas calendar, rolls into life this week with events every day from Thursday thru Sunday. For the first time in the history of the event, Texas wine plays a big role in the program.

On Thursday, at Savor The Arboretum (at which guests eat, sip and stroll their way around the grounds of the Dallas Arboretum amid the Spring flowering) and at the International Grand Tasting on Saturday night in the Dallas Convention Center there will be a special Taste Of Texas area.   Continue reading →

New Texas Winery Association Formed To Promote Texas Wine Quality

carousel_picnic-on-lawnby Andrew Chalk

“Texas Fine Wine” is a new association of wineries in the state formed to promote quality Texas wine. Its founding members are four of Texas’ best wineries: Bending Branch Winery, Brennan Vineyards, Duchman Family Winery and Pedernales Cellars. The founders plan to get the organization up and running (mainly through through promotional events for the trade, public and media) in the first year, and then open up membership to all Texas wineries with a quality-oriented philosophy.

That philosophy will, of course, include a commitment to use Texas grapes whenever possible. More significantly, it will include a commitment to label wines with the correct place of grape origin. For example, if a Texas winery sells a wine made from California grapes, they would label it ‘American’, consistent with Federal wine labeling law. This is the first time, to my knowledge, that a wine producer group in Texas has come out so unambiguously as a body in favor of honest labeling of Texas wine.

Writers and consumers have pressed for the industry to take this approach for years. Many individual wineries have adopted the practice already. It is a sign of the maturing of the industry that a producer organization can now endorse it.      Continue reading →

Dallas’ Big To-Do This Year: Light Up Our Santiago Calatrava Bridge

628x471by Andrew Chalk

This is San Francisco’s Bay Bridge, which was decidedly number two to the Golden Gate Bridge until entrepreneur Ben Davis had the idea of lighting it up in a spectacular mashup of art and technology. The 25,000 LED algorithmically generated light show by artist Leo Villareal went live about a year ago and runs every night. It cost $8m to design, make, install and tear down. LEDs are so efficient that the electricity cost for the two-mile display is only $11,000/year. The whole thing, known as the Bay Lights, is paid for by donations.   Continue reading →

Sigel’s held their annual Benchmark Pinot Noir Tasting this week. Fifty Pinot Noirs from California, Oregon, Burgundy, Argentina and New Zealand went head-to-head in a sell-out event at The Park City Club. CraveDFW was there and we discovered several interesting things.

First: There wasn’t a bad wine! Kudos to Sigel’s for aiming for such a high quality event.      Continue reading →

Snuffer’s Reopens On Lower Greenville

by Andrew Chalk

Some restaurants cease being restaurants and transform into institutions. Snuffer’s, established in 1978 (that’s a year after the release of the Apple II, and concurrent with some pretty gruesome hair styles) has as much of a case as anywhere in Dallas to have made that transition.

Last weekend, the original Lower Greenville Avenue spot reopened, complete with a brand new menu which is… the brand old menu! Cheddar fries and sloppy burgers are the core as always and regulars piled in for the opening weekend at which I was a media guest.   Continue reading →

Alamos Shows Off Its Latest Offerings

IMG_20140228_140506

by Andrew Chalk

Alamos, the Argentine winery best known for its popular Malbec, came through town recently in the personage of Jimena Turner, Director of Wine Education for Wines of Catena, and showed me the full range of their wines that are distributed in the U.S. market. If you are Argentinian, you get the surname ‘Turner’ if your mother marries a Welshman of English extraction at some point in her life.

Jimena showed me that Alamos and Argentina are more than just Malbec. We tasted through their range of wines starting with their Torrontés. This native white grape produces aromatic wines with a bouquet and taste of citrus fruit and often additional flavors of tropical fruits. It is usually not aged in oak, stainless steel being the preferred medium in order to leave the fruit flavors as natural as possible. Ageing time is short, a matter of weeks, so this is a wine very much “made in the vineyard”.    Continue reading →

AF+B Hits Its Stride In Fort Worth

IMG_3477

by Andrew Chalk

A really stupid TV show asks three people, qualified only by their ignorance, to visit the same restaurant and score it out of five. On last weekend’s edition, two diners took marks off one of the nominated restaurants because “they had run out of one of the dishes”. Duh! I can prevent that ever happening again. I will serve plastic food straight from the walk in. “Freezer To Table” as quick as a microwave oven can warm it. What a concept.

Those dumbbells are going to hate AF+B, the newly opened Consilient Hospitality restaurant in Fort Worth’s flourishing West 7th district. They source much of their food from local farmers and ranchers who, as a footnote to the menu intones, “produce in small quantities. As a result, certain items may not be available from time to time”. As careful planning, not luck, would have it, there are a bounty of other interesting choices on the menu.    Continue reading →
