Grace Wins With Christmas In July

Last Thursday, I had the privilege of attending Grace’s Christmas in July celebration benefiting the American Heart Association in Fort Worth. For three glorious hours, I was able to taste some outstanding seafood appetizers while tasting many different forms of bubbly. I would be lying if I did not say that I was looking forward to this for a week. I never miss an opportunity to drink good bubbles and man there were some good bubbles here.

When I see an event that claims to be “Champagne” like a Champagne brunch, I get a little worried. Too often people assume that bubbles equals Champagne and as much as I like Cava from Spain and Prosecco from Italy, they just never stand up to the purity of flavor as true Champagne. With a $50 cover charge, one should expect true Champagne and Grace did not disappoint. There were three tables lined by buckets of ice and lots of bubbly. Continue reading →

Clos Pegase Wine Dinner at Second Floor

As my wife and I were going up the escalator in the Westin Hotel to enjoy our first experience at the 2^nd Floor, I knew this was going to be good. Clos Pegase brought the wine and J Chastain and Scott Gottlich brought the food and I brought my appetite. If you have not been in the Second Floor, it is a beautifully modern bar with an 8 page scotch menu, including tasting flights! For that reason alone Second Floor earns a return visit, especially on a guys night out. But I did not come here for scotch, I came for wine. Continue reading →

Central 214’s Blythe Beck Celebrates Our Troops

Central 214’s chef Blythe Beck and her friends are supporting the troops with a special day of food and pampering for service personnel headed back to duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition to posh spa services and Chef Blythe’s Texas-style catered luncheon for the military families, Central 214 will present USO DFW with the special signed “Hello from the Home Front” banner and funds raised from its previous Memorial Day Weekend Benefit Patio Party.

The USO (United Service Organizations) lifts the spirits of America’s troops and their families millions of times each year at hundreds of places worldwide. The organization provides a touch of home through centers at airports and military bases, top quality entertainment and innovative programs and services. They also provide critical support to those who need us most, including forward-deployed troops and their families, wounded warriors and their families and the families of the fallen.

Kosta Browne Wine Retreat

A shared vision of Dan Kosta and Michael Browne who were working at John Ash & Co, restaurant in 1997 was realized that summer after they pooled their tips to purchase 1,000 pounds of Pinot Noir grapes, a used hand-cranked stemmer and crusher and an old barrel that fleshed out to birth the Kosta Browne Winery.

Recently Kosta Browne hosted a retreat at the winery with Charlie Palmer and his staff of great chefs preparing the opening meal. The guests were treated to golf, spa treatments and even a cooking demo by John Ash.

Other celebrity chefs were on hand including Emeril Lagasse who provided one of the meals that was fabulous, as did Kent and brother Kevin Rathbun who topped of the evening with their signature barbecue. Continue reading →

Cafe Momentum Serves 85 in Pop-Up Dinner

Café Momentum is a non-profit restaurant concept that serves as a culinary training facility for the disadvantaged. The primary focus is on the Dallas County Youth Village, a juvenile detention facility for 13-17 year old non-violent adjudicated young boys. With the help of the Youth Village Resources of Dallas created a culinary program within the facility that is currently teaching the students basic culinary skills. Upon completing the program, the students graduate to a paid position working in the Youth Village cafeteria. Continue reading →
