Savor Arts District Stroll

by Katie Minchew

Friday evening, as part of the infamous Savor Dallas event, a friend and I participated in the Arts District Stroll. The event was hosted at four venues (Meyerson Symphony Center, Winspear Opera House, Dallas Museum of Art, and Nasher Sculpture Center) and promised lots of wine, beer, and snacks, all to sample in a very short two hours. The event started at 5:00pm, not allowing for us worker bees to arrive on time. We raced in and registered at the Meyerson, ready to mix and mingle with our fellow Dallasites.       Continue reading

The Midwest Trilogy at Bryant Hall

by Katie Minchew

The Midwest Trilogy by Eric Steele was a powerful, in your face display of the plight of humanity. Combining film with live acting, the production is unique and modern. Focusing on three separate stories of the traveling salesman in harsh corporate America, the play really makes me want to stay in small business, and maybe even go into business for myself to avoid the situations portrayed here.     Continue reading

Cycling in Style

by Katie Minchew

As the famous lyrics from Queen’s “I Want to Ride My Bicycle” play in my head, I recall this past sunny day Saturday when I strolled the West Village streets looking for the promised flash mob of bicyclers. I was sorely disappointed at its absence but quickly charmed back to my jolly mood after chatting with the two head bikers from Dallas Cycle Style, sisters Tracy and Amanda Popken.         Continue reading

Duchman Wine Tasting at The Fairmont

by Katie Minchew

After dodging the $17 parking lot, a wine fan friend of mine and I giddily ventured into the Pavilion Room at The Fairmont Dallas upon an invite to experience a sample of what the Duchman Family Winery  has to offer. Each of the four wines were paired with an hors d’oeuvre created by Andre Natera, Executive Chef at the hotel.     Continue reading

Inwood Estates Magdalena Release

by Katie Minchew

We received an exclusive tasting at Inwood Estates Cellars  yesterday afternoon. Warming up our taste buds to receive the recently released Magellan, and brand new Magdalena, assistant winemaker Marc Moberg sampled out the 2010 Chardonnay first.

It is a full Chardonnay, light and crisp and perfect to wet our palates experience wine number two, the Tempranillo-Cabernet, which is a beautiful red, their most popular, in fact. It is teeming over with happy fruit flavors, like cherries. The Magellan was next–gorgeous. Meant for the heavy wine drinker, it is full of tannins and flavors from the dark fruits like black berries and plums, and is very earthy. This will be one of Inwood’s best aging wines.   Continue reading

Crave Drink of the Week: Oak

by Katie Minchew

Oak is my new favorite restaurant. It has the one of the coolest vibes, which made me feel all grown up and like a true-blue Dallasite. Let me begin by telling you that I am not typically a fan of sitting at bars, alone. Usually I am one of those annoying people who walk into a restaurant and head immediately for the booth in the back, the ideal table to most restaurant-goers. I take up the entire table with my good friends: laptop, notebook, purse, and work tote. We have a great time.

But at Oak, I was immediately drawn to the light, open, marble-top bar with smiling Ali Love behind it. I took a seat at the comfy stool and invited a few of my aforementioned “friends” to join me and was greeted by Abraham Bedell, creator of the entire drink menu and the bar program.                    Continue reading
