Mi Chula is a Fresh Oasis in Plano

by Steven Doyle

Last week we were in Plano and on a hunt for lunch. In the familiar surrounding of Preston near 121 we were looking for something new to taste having enjoyed Holy Grail Pub and the numerous Indian and Middle Eastern haunt in that area. At once we spotted Mi Chula and suddenly was stricken with the desire relleno, the greatest quality control dish at any new restaurant we wish to sample.

Mi Chula was founded in late 2007 by a team of restaurant innovators including Joey Shashy, founder of Uncle Julio’s. When Joey sold Uncle Julio’s several years ago, he was still committed to exploring new ways to bring great Mexican food to the DFW market.    Continue reading

Sean Conner of Whiskey Cake Star of the Bar

by Crave Staff

On Monday at the Dallas ultralounge Candleroom, no one could hold a candle to Sean Conner’s mixology skills. As a result, he could make the cover of GQ Magazine.

Conner, Bar Manager at Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar, won the Dallas finals of the 2011 Nation’s Most Inspired Bartender Search, presented by GQ magazine and Bombay Sapphire. He will represent Dallas in the national Most Inspired contest on Sept. 11-13 at The Palms Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev., the winner of which will be a cover model for GQ, among other accolades.

“It was awesome, and a lot of fun,” Conner said. “I was in the company of a lot of great bartenders from the area, and to win the contest against them was a real honor and a sweet rush.”   Continue reading

Franciscan Wine Dinner at Jaspers

by Steven Doyle

Last evening I was invited to join a roomful of spirited enthusiasts at Jasper’s  for the wine dinner hosted by Franciscan Estates. This not only gave us a keen look at the rich wines from California but also a fresh peek at the cuisine coming from the Plano kitchen.

We were greeted early in the evening by Franciscan winemaker Michael Eckstein, who will be in Dallas tonight for a look at wine blending before moving on to Austin and Houston on his week long junket to Texas. As the passed appetizers floated freely in the room we sipped a beautiful 2008 Sauvignon Blanc which was simply refreshing on the palate as we escaped the soaring 100-degree heat of the day. The wonderful melon and grassy notes soothed as the wine finished well with a muted lime. The wine retails across Dallas for about $17.  Continue reading
