TBT: How I Turned 33 Cents Into Dinner With Tyler Florence And 80’s Pop Star Tiffany, And Won The Internet *Update*

20140109_152639by Bryan Coonrod

Earlier in the week I saw a post on Facebook that 80’s pop star Tiffany would be performing at the Vista Ridge Mall in Lewisville. My curiosity was quickly piqued as the first thing that popped in my head was the documentary “I Think We’re Alone Now” which details the day to day life of stalkers of said pop artist. Would these people show up in Lewisville? Would there be others? People watching would be quite the spectacle at this event, and I was in with a mission to try and meet Tiffany and take a goofy picture.

I had told a few friends of my plan and they had a chuckle not thinking I was really going to do it. I was able to find a friend and her son that were willing to go with me so that I myself would not look like one of those stalkers.    Continue reading

Pecan Lodge Served Their Last Brisket at the Dallas Farmers Market

The owners of Pecan Lodge, Justin and Diane Fourton, have been blessed. In 2010 they decided to leave their corporate jobs to take on their first restaurant and took up digs in Shed #2 at the Dallas Farmers Market. The plan was to recreate the same solid BBQ that Justin grew up on in Abilene, and mix in some terrific sides and fried chicken straight from Diane’s family table. It was slow going at first even though Justin was blazing a trail and highhandedly resurrected the Dallas BBQ scene.  The love and expertise in which Justin throws down his  succulent brisket, meaty ribs, and heavily sought after burnt ends is legend unto itself.

It probably didn’t seem like an over night success for the Fourton’s. In the beginning the foot traffic was not the same as it is today at the downtown farmers market. That all came after a few key television appearances, specifically on the Food Network’s Guy Fieri circus, Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Although Fieri is abrasive, his audience is loyal and soon queued up around the building for a taste of what the Fourton’s knew to be the best BBQ around. And it is.    Continue reading

The Hunt For A Bowl Of Red: The Fatted Calf

IMG_5145by Bryan Coonrod

In our search for the perfect bowl of red, we asked contributor Bryan Coonrod to chime in on one of his favorite chili bowls in the DFW area. Bryan is one of the area’s hottest DJ’s in Dallas and has a voracious appetite.

One of my favorite suburban cities to dine in is Rockwall just east of Dallas on I-30 . You can find several of the top restaurants in the area here such as Ava, Zanata, Culpepper’s and The Fatted Calf where we end up today to try their Texas Red Chili. Chef-Owner Ted Grieb runs this establishment and delivers some awesome food time and time again, which you can tell by the full dining room we saw today. The chili here is quite the serving; a large bowl that you can call Texas-sized.  Continue reading

The celebrity chef series at Cane Rosso hit a grand slam last night as Aaron Franklin from the much vaunted Franklin BBQ in Austin made his appearance after a weekend at the Meat Fight event. I had put this event on my calendar as soon as the chefs lineup was announced months ago, apparently so did many others as a line began forming at 5pm an hour before opening, by 6pm the line had reached down to local watering hole Adair’s.     Continue reading
