Eddie V’s Restaurant Week Sneak Preview

by Steven Doyle

Restaurant week is fast closing in on the DFW area so we decided to check out a smattering of menus and do some pre-Restaurant Week reconnaissance. Our first look is at Eddie V’s who recently celebrated their first anniversary in Dallas.

When we visited Eddie V’s recently we found a thriving lounge scene in the front of the restaurant. Dark with a retro atmosphere that harkened back to days when you might find cigars if the laws weren’t so restrictive. The musical act that night played dreamy tunes from the classic American songbook, something difficult to find in Dallas. Continue reading

by Steven Doyle

Jill Bates is certainly the darling of pastry chefs in Dallas today.  Her cute but quirky demeanor endears and definitely lends itself to practicing her craft in one of the busier kitchens in Dallas today.  As a pastry chef she has paid her dues and worked the ranks as any savory chef might.

Read on for the first of a series of DFW Pastry Chefs that begins with The Ritz-Carlton and Dean Fearing’s pastry chef, Jill Bates.  Continue reading

San Fermin Festival Celebration at Sangria

Celebrate the medieval festival of San Fermin and the running of the bulls at Sangria in Dallas with 50 cent sangria, numerous tapas specials and LIVE music all day, 11am to 11pm Wednesday, July 6, 2011.

Stop in at Sangria to hear Flamenco guitarist John Goode followed later by two Late Night DJ’s. More on Tate’s Craft Cocktails

2723 McKinney Today

by Steven Doyle

More information on the new entry into the cocktail world in Uptown. The co-owner and Dallas operator of Tate’s, David Ferre, touched base with me and offered more details on this interesting new concept that will soon begin construction at 2723 McKinney Avenue in Uptown, a nearly 2,000 square foot space that was formerly Uptown Mood Spa.

Staying true to the original Tate’s Craft Cocktails, the Dallas version will be customized to suit local taste and culture. The cocktail menu used in Winston-Salem will be adjusted and take advantage of tequilas, as well as change up names of the current cocktails.

The food will not be prepared in-house, but instead the lounge will use an off-site caterer similar to the concept in North Carolina where the wife and founder of Tate’s operate a catering business that handles all the dining needs. A local caterer has not been selected as of today, but Ferre said he is in talks with a few at this time.  Continue reading

Davis Family Vineyards Dinner at Dragonfly

by David Donalson

Heading to the beautiful Hotel ZaZa, I was conflicted on how this dinner might go. I had heard the rumors of a one star review for Dragonfly from Leslie Brenner of the Dallas Morning News (I cannot read behind a paywall…) and yet many people whom I trust told me that Dan Landsberg, the executive chef at Dragonfly, could really cook. So as I walked by the pool of beautiful people and into the restaurant, I had a clean slate to judge the food and the wine.

Davis Family Vineyards is definitely a family affair. Guy Davis is the grape grower and winemaker in this two man show. The other man is his son.  Located in the bend of the Russian River Valley, Davis Family Vineyards has your standard Sonoma varietals: Zinfandel, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. What was also interesting was the other two wines that were from juice outside the estate, a white blend and a  Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. They made for some great compliments to the food.  Continue reading
