ZaZa Continues to Rock Brunch

by Steven Doyle

This weekend Hotel ZaZa saw another session of its third-weekend Sunday School Brunch. The brunch features eggs, pancakes, lobster frittatas and the usual brunch fare kicked up with bottles of champagne and pitchers of strong mimosas to take the edge off the weekend revelry that rocked the hotel’s previous nights hoopla.

The brunch is so much more than a plate of scrambled eggs. Soon after sitting the room darkens and the music thrills the air to continue the party for those that just do not quite want the party to end.

The staff fully embraces the Sunday afternoon party by dressing the part. Even chef de cuisine Bradford Hodgkins played it up by dressing in his best nerdy school girl regalia, replete with locks and freckles. Fortunately there is plenty of eye candy to go around to make up for the playful chef.    Continue reading

An Anniversary to Remember

by Steven Doyle

This past weekend I was fortunate to help celebrate the 10th wedding anniversary of Sharon Van Meter and her husband Jerry Owens with their close friends and family.

You may know Van Meter from Milestone Culinary Arts Center, but she is also a very well respected chef who is a graduate of the Cordon Bleu, Paris, has been inducted in the honorable culinary societies of World Master Chefs Society, Les Dames d’Escoffier and Euro-Toques International. She has cheffed at the Ritz Carlton in Chicago and also is Director of New Projects Development for Food Network TV.

I am fortunate to know the couple and will admit that Sharon has been instrumental in guiding me with several projects. She is giving and benevolent as she is talented and loving.

With all that gushiness aside I wish to share a few photos from the couples special evening where they hosted about 30 for dinner at the Milestone this past weekend.

One Beer Island: Summer

by Jeff Fryman

The crazy, fake bunch of hoodlums that held me captive for a week, forcing me to slam Oskar Blues GUBNA like I was in Cancun for Spring Break are back and they want me to pick a beer for the hot Texas summer.

Being born and reared in Texas, trust me when I tell you, it can get pretty hot. Sometimes, I feel like I am literally cooking in my own sweat; I am the primary ingredient in a veritable Jeff au jus. They don’t call it the panhandle simply because it looks kind of like a pan-handle. Ok, maybe they do, but you get my point: it’s freaking hot. And how do you beat the heat? With a beer that loves hot weather just as much as us, Texans (I am saying that last part with a good ol’ Texas draw).

If stranded on an island for a week with only one beer to drink, this week I would pick: Brasserie Dupont’s Saison Dupont Vieille Provision.  Continue reading

Nosh Has Class – Cancelled

by Steven Doyle

Join chefs Avner Samuel and Jon Stevens of Nosh this Saturday, June 25 at 10am for what has promised to be a marvelous cooking class and a study into the most timely summer heirloom tomatoes.

We were not given a class description, but Samuels is always over the top. The best part about the class, you get to eat his words. We hear there are just a few seats left for the class. This is a great opportunity to work with this former Mansion alum.

Nosh Eurobistro
$95. Saturday, June 25, 10 am.
4216 Oak Lawn Avenue, Dallas, 214.528.9400

edit:  An eager reader called to sign up for the class and was told this was cancelled today.

Sunday Brunch: Komali

by Joy Jangles

Back when I lived in Tucson, I fell in love with the authentic Mexican cuisine over there – house made tangy and spicy tomatillo salsas, tortillas made from scratch, and the day-long simmered sauces.  You can literally taste the love in native Mexican dishes, what better way to feel at home than eating food that’s made from the heart?    Continue reading
