Scotch & Malt Whisky Tasting & Festival 2014 Highlights

nikka_yoichi_15yo_small_boxby James Davidson

This year at the Scotch & Malt Whisky Tasting & Festival, I focused on sampling the special additions and the single malts I haven’t run across in the wild.  Below are some of my reactions to the Scotches and single malts available.

One of the first single malts on my goal list was the Nikka Yoichi 15 year.  Japanese whiskies are known for subtle flavors with slight complexities.  Sadly, the peat flavor overpowers the fruit notes to early in the drink to really say it’s balanced.  It wasn’t awful, but there are many other 15 year old whiskies that are better.

While we are talking about 15 year old whiskies, let’s mull over the Linkwood 15 year I sampled.  The bottle wasn’t impressive to look at but the golden spirit wasn’t to bad.  Sweetness gave way to a smokey flavors that were not peaty.  As far as finishes goes, this one was long.  Smokey notes sat on the back of my tongue well after swallowing.  Depending on your inclination, this may be a good thing.  Overall, the Linkwood 15 year is a good whisky.   Continue reading

The tradition of Savor Dallas, the most delicious food and wine festival in Texas, continues with a 10th Anniversary celebratory edition, March 20-22.  Over three days of wining and dining, this “celebration of wine, food, spirits and the arts,” spotlights dozens of the area’s top chefs and more than 400 premium wines, spirits and beers throughout the weekend.  New this year, Savor Dallas adds a spotlight on Texas wines and spirits.   Ticket prices for the individual events range from $20 to $150.  Weekend passes for $365 also are available at an overall cost saving.

“When we started this all those years ago our mission was pretty straightforward.  We wanted to support the city we love, and give upscale food and wine lovers the kind of premium experience they deserve,” says Jim White, Savor Dallas co-founder along with his wife Vicki Briley-White, “We had no idea the celebration would grow into an event encompassing downtown Dallas that would host some 5,000 guests over a three-day celebration. by Andrew Chalk

Every good thing must come to an end and the 2014 San Antonio Cocktail Conference certainly did it in style. They closed the sidewalks on Houston Street and set up a stroll from John Besh’s Lüke all the way across the river down to Bohanan’s Prime Steaks and Seafood. Then they threw a late night party at the Charline McCoombs Empire Theatre hosted by The 86 Company and featuring barn-stomping cover band The Spazmatics.   Continue reading

San Antonio Cocktail Conference 2014: Friday was ‘Texas Spirits Night’

IMG_3208Live Music Throughout The Night

by Andrew Chalk

One of the hottest destinations in San Antonio right now is ‘Pearl’, a mixed use residential, retail and entertainment complex centered around the old Pearl brewery. The brewery is being completely gutted to make way for a new Kimpton Hotel that rejuvenates the fine architectural details and southern elevation of the old brewery. I recommend a visit.

I’ll drink to that or, rather, I did on the second night of the San Antonio Cocktail Conference this  month. It was Texas Spirits Night and, having written about the burgeoning Texas wine industry many times, it is reassuring to see that the same phenom is rampant in the spirits world. Whether you want whiskey, vodka, gin or tequila, it is all available from in-state and you have the choice of several producers too.     Continue reading
