A Duo Of Dallas Brew Tours: Peticolas And Community

Fall, the best of seasons aside from Spring. Temperatures cool down, leaves change color, temperatures cool down, children go back to school and most importantly temperatures cool down. With a cooler temperature, it is a world of difference when you decide on going to a large un-air conditioned warehouse for a brewery tour. Some do have temperature controlled areas but most can be as hot as the outside or hotter if there are plenty of bodies jockeying for beer.

This past weekend was a definite nice time for a brewery tour or possibly two tours if you feel up to it. Seeing as though Peticolas Brewing Company and Community Beer Company are roughly one mile away from each other, this seemed like a very doable reality. The tour started at 12pm at Peticolas and last pour is at 2:45. Community does their tour from 2pm-5pm, so times are not a problem. Continue reading →

Touring Lakewood Brewing Company

It’s a Saturday. You have the day off, no serious projects around the residence and there are no plans. Weather is not an issue. What to do? How about a brewery tour?! The biggest problem is what brewery to take a tour on a Saturday. This week the brewery tour happened in Garland. Lakewood Brewing Company opened in August 2012 and continues to brew some very impressive beers. The brewery itself has a nice lodge-like front area where the majority of the samples are poured. A very large table greets visitors and welcomes friendly discussion about almost anything. The main brew floor hosts live music and a secondary pouring station with two taps. In the back of the brewery, a food truck offered wares for those looking for a bite. Four samples were tasted on this tour for the entry fee of ten dollars and each beer was drank from a Belgian-style beer glass.

The first beer sampled was the anniversary beer, Lion’s Share I. This beer is a double IPA and gave a nice malty-citrus scent. Color was a light caramel and slightly cloudy. Foam was clinging on the top of the glass. The first sip gave a pleasant, sweet maltiness with very little hop bite. There was a strong flavor of alcohol but no alcohol burn or bite as one might expect. Being a double IPA, the alcohol can be expected. This beer does justice as the specialty for their anniversary. Touring Firewheel Brewing Company

There are tons of craft beers and more importantly, and lucky for us, there has been an increase in craft breweries in the DFW since 2011. The range of beers, from bitter IPA’s to strong, robust Porters gives the discerning palate options that most commercial breweries cannot match. That’s not even mentioning the flavor creations that spring forth to just slap you right in the taste buds. Fortunately, local breweries offer tours for the tasting and socializing with fellow beer lovers. These tours allow a participant to pay a moderate fee, normally around ten dollars. You receive a glass and a specific amount of tickets for samples, normally three.

One such tour was experienced this past week at a hidden jewel known as Firewheel Brewing Company in Rowlett. The brewery is smaller than most but what it lacks in size it makes up for in flavor and offerings. The atmosphere is very relaxed and easygoing. An inside area greets guests with comfortable couches and stools. In the rear of the brewery, there is a beer garden if you prefer the outdoors. The owner/brewer is very easy to engage in conversation and answers any questions a patron may have. Live music and food trucks are present but not every week. Have no fear though, there are food places nearby or you can bring your own. Parking is also relatively easy to find. Continue reading →

A Look At Armadillo Ale Works

It’s not easy to start a business. Many of you that have understand how difficult it can be. If it isn’t the financial aspect, it can be the location or the legality of the business. Craft beer breweries hit these problems frequently. If it is not all the bureaucratic red tape of the liquor laws then it may just be the financial downside of equipment and ingredients to make that liquid ambrosia we enjoy tasting so much. Ask any home brewing enthusiast if they would enjoy making beer for a living and the answer would probably be unanimously “YES!”. Armadillo Ale Works knows this knowledge firsthand. Beer Me: Deep Ellum Brewing Company

It’s not often that a brewery opens with little fanfare. This might be because of our love of beer or may be because of the flavors blending together from the genius mind of the brewer. When you hear about this new brewery, your heart flutters slightly, your pupils may dilate and your mouth may water in the anticipation of finding where this beer. If you’re lucky, the beer happens to surface at your local watering hole or maybe the restaurant you got dragged to friends or a significant other. When the brewery bottles or cans its beer, you search everywhere for its location.

The only downside to all this is that the full beer experience will be limited. What if you were able to sip the golden nectar from its birthplace? Sniff the grains that offered their sugars, touch the tanks that coaxed those sugars out and met the people responsible for imparting this little taste nirvana upon you? It might be time for a local brewery tour if this sounds exciting. Continue reading →

Revolver To Bottle Blood and Honey

Revolver Brewing Company is located in Granbury, Texas which is about thirty-five minutes southwest of Fort Worth. Made up of a team of three including Ron and Rhett Keisler, and Grant Wood, they have managed to place the brewery on the map and in many pubs and restaurants in North Texas quite possibly due to a single brew they call Blood and Honey. Launched a year ago this August, Blood and Honey is far and away Revolver’s biggest hit. Continue reading →
