Richardson’s Jasmine Cafe Is Serving Authentic Palestinian Cuisine

DSC05630by Steven Doyle

When it come to delicious Mediterranean cuisine I set my sights recently on a spot that has been around for 10 years  in Richardson, Jasmine Cafe. I had been curious about the restaurant that I have passed many, many times in the past, particularly eye-balling the hookah lounge next door which is part of the same business. The lounge always seemed very crowded (and it is), and the restaurant equally as busy.

Owned by brother Salmen and and Loai Nameer, they both fell into the restaurant business by pure happenstance. The Nameer’s lived in Jerusalem, each attending university. Salmen decided to pick up shifts at a restaurant while working on his electronic engineering degree. Although he did graduate, his heart was really in restaurants. He enjoyed the people aspect, and he was working at one of the more famous restaurants which has been serving continuously for over 65 years; a place called Philadelphia which serves tasty Palestinian cuisine. Brother Loai soon followed in the footsteps, working his way up the ranks, beginning as dishwasher, and fell in love with his eventual post as chef.  Continue reading

Sapporo Has Closed For Business

kang 165by Steven Doyle

Sapporo Ramen and Sushi in Richardson’s Little China Town on Greenville Avenue has shuttered. In its place is a similar concept with some new items. Look for Oldero (they spelled it out for me on the phone) in its place. The new management say that they will still serve ramen, sushi and other similar items, but have expanded the menu a bit.

No word from super star sushi chef Sean Kang who gave the little restaurant much of its personality. Sean, answer your phone.

Alamo Drafthouse: Wicked Cool

P1010889by  James Davidson

Finally, Bid D got an Alamo Drafthouse, now I would have my chance to go to the theater.  Calling Alamo Drafthouse a theater is kind of like calling the mall a clothing store.  Alamo has an impressive list of local beers and a pretty decent whiskey list.

Besides awesome drinks and a wide food menu, Alamo hosts special events often.  On December 5th, they hosted a Prohibition celebration and I decided to go.  There was 1933’s music playing when you entered the lobby of the theater and they were showing Lawless.  Matt Bondurant was there to talk about his book, Wettest County in the World and his family in which Lawless was based off of.

Kampong Is The New Malaysian Restaurant In Richardson

IMG_2865Nasi Lemak – Lamb curry, egg noodles stir fried with Kampong sauce

by Andrew Chalk

Kampong is Malaysian for village. I mention that so that if you ever hear someone say “It takes a Kampong”, or a singing group called “The Kampong People”, or a place called “Greenwich Kampong” you will know what they mean. That is just part of the service that we deliver here at Crave.

The Kampong Asian Fusion in Richardson is a (mainly) Malaysian menu served by Malaysians and owned by Malaysians who are new to town. They found that 10% state and local personal income taxes and a mayor who dictated what size soda you can buy made not even the spectacular natural beauty of Flushing, NY worth sticking around for. They decamped to Texas.   Continue reading

Haystack Burger and Barley Opens In Richardson

DSC08225by Steven Doyle        photos by Steven Doyle

Recently we published a list of our ten favorite burgers in Dallas. The list included mostly mom and pop operations, some who have been in business for as long as 55 years. In the past few years Dallas has become a Mecca of burgers, which certainly cannot be a bad thing. We all love a good burger, and they are certainly fun to compare and contrast the flavors of beef, bun and oozing ingredients.

Yesterday we paid a visit to a new burger outlet that only recently opened for business in Richardson. Needless to say we loved what we found or you would not be reading this text today. Haystack Burgers and Barley is owned by couples  Kevin and Jenny Galvan and Rob and Christine Wondoloski.       Continue reading
