First Look: Monta Ramen

IMG_1637by Timothy Pham

Yet another ramen location has open up recently in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The latest rendition to come to our fair city is Monta Ramen that originated from Las Vegas, NV. Their newest location is located in Richardson, in the Promenade North center. The menu is made up of six different flavoring of ramen ranging from the normal tonkotsu and miso to a spicy tonkotsu and kuro ramen. While there I ordered takana fried rice, some takoyaki, and the kuro ramen.

The wait staff told me that the takana fried rice would be a little salty due to the fact that takana is a pickled mustard leaf. Personally, I thought it was delicious and with the right amount of saltiness. The rice was soft and fluffy with just enough bite, and it was complimented with enough chashu pork to make this a meal in itself if not an appetizer to share. The takoyaki, a snack made with octopus chunks and batter was crispy on the outside, spongy and piping hot on the inside was a delight to eat. It was a typical flavoring of takoyaki sauce and Japanese mayonnaise, which isn’t to say that it was if anything normal.  Continue reading

Pakistani Soul Food at BBQ King

bbq1by Sally-Page Stuck

I have a soft spot for small businesses whose owners put their hearts and souls into their ventures. Such is the case for the delightfully quirky Pakistani restaurant, BBQ King. Father and son team Hafeez Ahmad and Tariq Ismail sold their convenience stores to raise the money to open the restaurant. The East Texas stores became a spiritual burden, as selling liquor violated their Islamic religious principles. Hafeez says, “We lost money, but it was money for the grave.”   Continue reading

Jasmine Cafe Serves Traditional Ramadan Iftar

dsc05636by Steven Doyle

Fasting the month of Ramadan was made obligatory during the month of Sha’aban, in the second year after the Muslims migrated from Mecca to Medina. Fatwas have been issued declaring that Muslims who live in regions with natural phenomenon such as the midnight sun or polar night should follow the timetable of Mecca.

While fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations with one’s spouse. Muslims are also instructed to refrain from sinful behavior that may negate the reward of fasting. Food and drink is served daily, before dawn and after sunset.   Continue reading

Classically Jazzed!

Bach_Doubleby Sally-Page Stuck   photos provided by Serkan Zanagar

Always innovative, Open Classical just raised the bar. Headed by violinist and composer, Mark Landson, Open Classical has produced over 125 classical events in the last three years. Their latest endeavor is its new series, Classically Jazzed. The premiere performance was on Friday, March 20 in Richardson’s Eisemann Center. Inspired by the music of classically trained jazz artist Eddie South, Classically Jazzed takes traditional pieces and reinvents them in the modern genre.

The works chosen are familiar: Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor, Für Elise, Mozart’s Symphony in G Minor and more.   Mark Landson  “wanted to create these in a way which stayed true to the motivic development that the composer wrote instead of just using the basic melodies and then doing improv.” To the untrained ear, it will sound reminiscent of French gypsy jazz of the mid-twentieth century (Think Django Reinhardt). Trained musicians will have much respect as they hear rhythms altered, chords modified and seemingly improbable components joined.   Continue reading

Hot Pots, Shrimp Balls and Mary at Caravelle

by Steven Doyle

We drove through Chinatown in Richardson this week in search of something particular, but the restaurant we were looking for was a mob scene. So we carefully summoned past memories of all the many choices of restaurants in the plaza and decided on Caravelle which has a focus on Vietnamese and Chinese dishes.

You can certainly find a worthy bowl of pho on the menu, but was looking for something a bit different. For a soup we ordered a combination hot pot which would encompass many of the seafood items they offer, but we were being waited on by the most entertaining Mary, who is also a manager at the restaurant, and she directed us to the catfish hot pot.  She said it was much more authentic, and we are a sucker for that phrase.   Continue reading
