Saganaki Tacos on Tonight’s Menu

by Steven Doyle

Just to keep things for the weekend extra spicy we wanted to share this taco we tried a few days ago. It is the Taco of the Week at Velvet Taco on Henderson called the Saginaki.

Saganaki is a Greek dish, typically a kefalograviera or sheep’s milk feta that is seared and often set to flames table side.   Continue reading

On Pure Ground Producing Ali’s Bacon Bliss

by Steven Doyle

We have missed Ali Morgan sending in her weekly picks of her favorite cheeses, but in her defense the girl has been insanely busy. While she is out spreading the curd about cheeses people are listening. She is now responsible for many cheese boards you will find across the city.

In fact, we just spoke with chef David Anthony Temple (that’s DAT to you and me), he said he plans to feature Ali’s top picks each week at the yet-to-open Mason Bar. One of the picks that will be featured weekly is Ali’s very own bacon-goat cheese that she created called Ali’s Bacon Bliss and is now being produced by On Pure Ground Dairy in a cool collaboration.          Continue reading

Thomas Mushrooms In Dallas

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

It would almost be a sure bet that if you are eating a mushroom today at a local restaurant, or perhaps even purchased one at your local grocer, that mushroom was delivered courtesy of Thomas Mushrooms headquartered here in Dallas. Eager to find out more on this unique industry, we trekked across the street from the Dallas Farmers Market to find out more how these fungi make their way to our table.

Walking into the warehouse located at 905 South Harwood we were met by one of the family members, Andrew Thomas. He was able to guide us through and show us all the varieties of mushrooms.      Continue reading

A Perfect Reuben at Old World Sausage Company

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

Strolling through Shed Two at the Dallas Farmer’s Market I discovered a few new tenants and one that we have seen repeatedly for several years. I have actually enjoyed stopping in to visit with the Old World Sausage Company for the fantastic Sinatra tunes they play all day. But our usual is the Vienna Dog, or as I lovingly refer to it as the Chi Dog.

You know the dog. It’s the one with the firm poppy seed bun and plenty of toppings including sport peppers and that crazy neon green relish. It’s distinctively Chicago as are the owners of old World, Al and Adrianne Capua.             Continue reading

Updated: Service Bar Closes This Weekend After 20 Years

by Bryan Coonrod

This weekend the Service Bar closes it’s doors after a 20 year run on Lower Greenville. I’m sure many of you have visited the bar or have heard some crazy story from someone else. The new Special Use Permit laws the city of Dallas passed last year has certainly turned Lower Greenville Avenue into a ghost town with only a handful of bars being allowed to stay in business. And now The Service bar has finally thrown in the towel and shut down.

The Service Bar was one of the first bars in Dallas to implement the modern version of a service industry night on Tuesdays in the early 90’s and many clubs today still have their own ( S.I.N. nights ). Those Tuesday nights were quite memorable. There was always a huge line to enter and getting a drink usually meant passing money over three to four people to the bartender to have a drink passed back to you as you squeezed into any open spot you could find.    Continue reading

Top Dallas Bartenders to Compete in Houston’s Speed Rack

by Steven Doyle   photos by Susan Migdol

If you happen to be in Houston this coming weekend you might wish to attend a pretty awesome cocktail competition called Speed Rack that pits some of the hottest bartenders in Louisiana and Texas to raise cash and awareness for breast cancer. Sixteen female bartenders will be in competition for bragging rights, a $500 honorarium and a chance to compete nationally in New York City later in the year. Two of our best female bartenders will be in that competition.

You may have read about both of these women in the past on craveDFW; enter Bonnie Wilson from Whiskey Cake and Trina Nishimura from The Cedars Social representing Dallas in the Houston contest this Sunday, January 22, 2012.         Continue reading

The fro-yo business must be in a lull when you see Pinkberry founder Young Lee in the news for things other than the latest terrific flavor of the month. It has been reported today that the Pinkberry founder and former kick boxer was arrested for allegedly beating a homeless man with a tire iron.
