Holiday Vignettes: Chef Richard Chamberlain

by Steven Doyle                 photo by Robert Bostick

For the next few days we will be running short holiday vignettes that include some of our favorite food people, not all necessarily chefs. Yesterday we sent out a list of questions with a holiday bent, some silly, some more serious, and asked the group to pick just a few to answer. The answers so far have been fun, and we are happy to share these with you.   Continue reading

McFadden’s Making Their Way to Addison

by Steven Doyle

McFadden’s Restaurant and Saloon is making its way to Addison after the first of the year, most likely in January. McFadden’s was established in New York in 1977 and is basically a mega sports bar with a large food menu and even larger Irish bent.

The food is your typical bar fare with plenty of wings, cheese sticks and meatloaf specials. But the restaurant also offers fresh fish dishes on their large menu.  Continue reading

We Celebrated National French Toast Day

by Steven Doyle

We celebrated National French Toast Day today by having a bite of the dish at the Original Pancake House, along with a few other favorites. The latest OPH opened recently in Addison, so we thought we would check out the new digs for one of our favorite breakfast spots.

In Spain they call this dish torriga, in the UK they refer to this as Poor Knights of Windsor, and in France they call French Toast pain perdu, or lost bread. Thought to come from more humble roots in a time where food waste was non-existent, old slices of bread were rejuvenated in an egg wash and fried to a crisp enjoyment, much like we would serve this today.   Continue reading

First Look: Addison’s Lazaranda

by Steven Doyle

Lazaranda Mexican Seafood Grill quietly opened nearly two weeks ago in Addison. The new Mexican restaurant is part of a very small chain located in Monterrey that includes five of their restaurants, and is the first of its brand to open in the United States.  The casual restaurant serves primarily grilled seafood dishes made with a  lazaranda, a small basket that holds the fish while roasted on the grill.

We checked out the new restaurant this week to get a feel for its surroundings and menu and were quite pleased with the findings. We chose not to attend the media blitz that occured before the opening and paid for our meal this past weekend.   Continue reading

by Steven Doyle

Last week we featured the tiny creperie in Addison that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, Flippin’ Out Crepes. We touched on chef Scott Hoffner’s background, and today we bring you a little Q&A with the chef to get to know him a bit better.    Continue reading

Flippin’ Out Crepes Delivers on Taste

by Steven Doyle      photos by Robert Bostick

We stopped in Addison’s Flippin’ Out crepery today to check out some of the new items that chef  Scott Hoffner had been making and were really pleased to see such a vast selection of crepes available.

Hoffner is a graduate of Johnson & Wales and was previously the Chef de’ Cuisine at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa. His current duties also include being the personal chef to Dallas Maverick player Tyson Chandler, which he has named a crepe for.  The Chandler is roasted chicken smothered with spinach, mushrooms & creamy bacon cheese sauce ($7.20). Pair this with your own wine, Flippin’ Out is BYOB.     Continue reading

A Chat with Kenny Bowers

by Steven Doyle           photos by Robert Bostick

We hooked up with Kenny Bowers, owner of Kenny’s Wood Fired Grill in Addison, Kenny’s Burger Joint in Frisco and for the past year Kenny’s Italian Kitchen, also in Addison.

Bowers is an engaging person who is excited about what he does for a living. He lives for food and restaurants, and it is with this passion that has carried him successfully through out his tenure in ownership. Bowers also walks the edge a bit, but that goes along with the personality that can work the outrageous hours that he does and still maintain control over each of his locations.

We enjoyed our conversation with chef Bowers and hope you do as well. This month marks the one-year anniversary for the Italian Kitchen and the six year anniversary for the Wood Fired Grill.   Continue reading

Flip You for Dinner

by Steven Doyle

These are times of strange yet imaginative restaurant promotions. In recent months we have seen owners give away food freely to the public, feature half priced menus, and now this little bit of intrigue from Social House Addison, located at 5100 Belt Line. The price of your dinner is determined on a coin toss.

Flip for Food Mondays starts today, November 7 at The Social House in Addison. Patrons can come in, eat to their hearts content, and- if they win the coin toss- pay for only alcohol and gratuity.    Continue reading
