Addison Oktoberfest 2011 Fun and Frivolity

by Steven Doyle

Another wild and wooly Addison Oktoberfest  has come and gone. This is by far one of our top festivals in Dallas, and who could blame us? Beer, Viele shone Frauen, and plenty of food to choose from – most all is pretty damned good.

With a busy schedule this weekend we checked out the festivities on Friday evening, and lucky call on our part. This is when one of our favorite bands were playing, Brave Combo. No Oktoberfest is complete with at least one gallon of beer and a chicken dance, right?      Continue reading

It is once again time for the annual Oktoberfest celebrated in Addison, Texas, named by USA Today as one of the top in the nation. Despite its name, the Addison Oktoberfest is a 4-day celebration that coincides with the celebration in Munich, which is a 16-day festival that ends on the first weekend in October and runs September 15-18, 2011.   Continue reading

Vegan Girl Goes to Best Thai

by Melissa Brenner

I often make the wrong assumption that people are aware of the entire vegan offerings at both Best Thai locations. This is an establishment that I frequent and believe you will once you have your first taste.

Thai is one of the safer genres for vegans, although you do need to ask about the soup stock and fish sauce. Best Thai gives you more than the standard “add tofu to the existing noodle or curry dishes”.    Continue reading

Wrapping Chocolate Conference 2011

by Steven Doyle   photos by Suzi Migdol

The Chocolate Conference 2011 detail was one of those dreamy assignments that from the outset couldn’t possibly suck, and the name lived up to all expectations. This past Saturday morning, and on into the late afternoon, a hoard of chocophiles lined up and paid their small entry fee into the event that was held at the Addison Conference Center with the promise of sampling and learning more about their obsession – chocolate.

Each of the attendees were given a slew of tickets that they could trade for a sample of chocolate from each of the vendors on hand, some local and others who had traveled from across the country.  Continue reading

The dinner will be appropriately paired with Canary’s Texas-themed menu with ingredients from the Lone Star State.

Canary is a huge supporter of breast cancer research and will be donating 25% of proceeds to Susan G. Komen.

 Time: 7 p.m.

Cost: $125 (includes tax and gratuity) four-course dinner, including wine. 25% of proceeds benefits breast cancer research.

Q de Cheval Turns Up the Flames in Addison

by Steven Doyle

The Grand Kempinski Hotel Dallas, formerly The Registry Hotel located in its Addison digs just off Beltline at Dallas Parkway has been through several transitions over the years. What once was a very stylish hotel tucked away in North Dallas stylized with hand-cut 18th century Italian crystal chandeliers, a smattering of grand ballrooms that hosted more than a few fetes, the Malachite Showroom that brought to Dallas interesting Vegas-style lounge acts, and of course who could forget Kempi’s, the underground labyrinth of a club that has since closed but speaks of a come back.

Time has settled on the property and more recently enjoyed a invigorating renovation under the Intercontinental Hotel reign that includes room upgrades and a revamp of the grand lobby area that includes the large bar Q. Gone is the old school Monte Carlo restaurant which served its fare share of steak dinners and Sunday brunches. Enter the Q de Cheval, the younger and more svelte cousin to the old school restaurant that has recently opened serve playful Texas cuisine to passing tourists and locals alike.  Continue reading
