More Pie Please

by Steven Doyle

This past weekend we were able to grab a slice of pie at the pop-up Pie Emporium located at 314 Bishop in Bishop Arts District during all the Mardi Gras hoopla. We not only sampled several of the mighty tasty pies, which were being sold by the slice, we also spoke to owners Megan Wilkes and Mary Gauntt.

“We started thinking about opening the store last Thanksgiving. We have been doing wholesale for a while now. We sell our pies to Urban Acres and Corner Market on Greenville,” said Wilkes.          Continue reading

Pop-Up Pies in Bishop Arts This Weekend

by Crave Staff

This weekend, Emporium Pies will sweeten Mardi Gras celebrations in the Bishop Arts District with a pop-up pie shop at 314 N. Bishop.

Emporium began when Megan Wilkes and Mary Gauntt had the “pie-dea” to perfect classic, family recipes while adding a little something special. Their hand-crafted gourmet pies sold briskly online during the holidays. Since the New Year, the girls (Megan is 25, Mary 24) have been at work in the kitchen and on the computer assembling a business plan for a storefront operation. Emporium’s plans have been received enthusiastically by Bishop Arts chefs, merchants, and property owners.      Continue reading

Ribald Cakes For That Special Party

by Steven Doyle     photos by Robert Bostick

Last week we stopped in to visit a shop that is not your typical culinary outlet in Dallas. Condom Nation  is now making what we believe to be the only professional ‘porn’ cakes in North Texas. These are the type of cakes you might find at a bachelor or bachelorette party, or perhaps to serve after a particularly bad divorce. There might be other occasions for these pastries, like for your naughtiest friend’s birthday. You get the idea.

Take a jump with us if this is even mildly interesting. This is where you will find the bawdy behavior for today.  The rest of you, stay here.   Continue reading

Prohibition Repealed! Celebrate Tonight

by Steven Doyle

In 1919 the 18th amendment was ratified into the Constitution of the United States. In the following years the government would spend $310 million enforcing Prohibition, and lose $11 billion in tax revenue.

Herbert Hoover would say, “Our country has deliberately undertaken a great social and economic experiment, noble in motive and far-reaching in purpose.” That noble experiment would eventually fail, creating more crime and poverty than it had originally set out to eradicate.               Continue reading

Celebrate National Pie Day(s): These Are A Few Of Our Favorite Pies

by Steven Doyle

There seems to be a dispute as to when National Pie Day is celebrated. We try to follow the food holidays as best and accurately as possible. One very reliable list marks today as pie day, and the Pie Council  (I guess there is a Pie Council) states that it is in January. We say why chance it and go with both. You can never be too handsome or have too much pie.

Let there be no doubt, we like pie.

We have known our fair share of great pies. We are not sure we can limit our pie fever to just five, and we are not quite sure we can do that, so we plan on name dropping a lot of pies out of our pie-hole.   Continue reading

Get Your Haunt On This Weekend

by Steven Doyle

Needing a scare for the weekend? We have collected some of the better haunted attractions in DFW. Note that many of the houses are not created for your little creatures, but there are a few that have separate scare tactics for youngsters.

Most haunted houses have two prices, one for regular admission, and a second speed pass price to exit through the long lines that you will surely meet. Jump in the haunted pit of horrors for a list of our local favorites.           Continue reading

Cooking with Nicole

by Steven Doyle

We checked in with chef Nicole to find out what she has planned for the coming weekends at her underground dinners and she did not disappoint.

For this weekend expect more locally grown produce in the way of carnival squash, Japanese sweet potatoes, pears, chard, purple hull peas, onions and reed avocados. The 7-course tasting menu will also highlight a cheeseboard from Ali Morgan of Scardello fame, and local grass-fed beef.    Continue reading
