Libertine Vegan Beer Dinner

by Melissa Brenner

The Libertine Bar has announced another Vegan Beer Dinner! After the success and sell out (plus a waiting list) of the last vegan dinner, the next event has been on the minds of The Libertine Bar staff. The turnout plus the fun and challenge of creating an all vegan dinner and beer pairing was a surprise and motivator to make it a regularly occurring affair.   Continue reading

UNT Adding All Vegan Option

by Steven Doyle

We just caught word from a Denton vegan friend that one of the four cafeterias at UNT has suddenly become vegan. UNT Dining Services has converted Mean Greens to an all vegan cafeteria and to open this Fall semester.

The culinary staff headed by Culinary Operations Chef, Wanda White, has been retooling the cafeteria creating recipes using nothing but fresh herbs, vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains. The goal is to satisfy the students, faculty and staff of UNT. The number one request has always been to have more vegan and vegetarian options. More people eat a variety of fruits and veggies than people who solely eat meat. Serving a completely vegan menu gives students the opportunity to explore new things and stimulate their tastes.      Continue reading

Hatch Chiles and WeMe in Grand Prairie

by Steven Doyle

Hatch Chile’s are arriving by the boxcar load and the DFW area has more options this year than ever. As we reported a few weeks back, Central Market  will be roasting chiles and infusing everything from cheeses to breads, along with classes and other fun events.

Another option this year includes the Grand Prairie Farmers Market which will be hosting its second annual Hatch Chile Festival August 20, 2011 at Market Square, 120 W. Main St., Grand Prairie. This will coincide with an Art Walk that will be held from 10AM to 4PM. The Farmers Market is open from 8AM – 1PM, with Hatch Chiles being sold till 2PM.  Continue reading

Alma Misses Mark For Vegan Girl

by Melissa Brenner

It’s a sad day when a hot guy that I like takes me out for dinner and we are both disappointed. I’ve been invited to the fairly new Mexican-style restaurant on Henderson  Alma before, but this was my first experience. Sadly, it was also my last.

My considerate dinner companion asked for a menu at the host stand, so that I could review my options before we were seated. There seemed to be plenty of veganizable option, so I was happy to have dinner at his first restaurant choice.

Our waitress was sweet and went to the kitchen to ask about options when I told her I was vegan. She came back with a menu marked with X’s on the items that would be vegan without the dairy toppings. They were not willing to make up anything off the menu for me, and that is fine. However, the reason for this became clear as the meal went on.   Continue reading

Chef DAT Underground Vegan Dinner

by Crave Staff

Last weekend craveDFW hosted a vegan event at the Milestone Culinary Center with an amazing turnout from vegans and non-vegans alike.  The dining lifestyle is gaining plenty of momentum in the DFW area which is why we added Vegan Girl to our staff.  Thousands of people read her each week.

Today we were sent a press release about a vegan underground dinner that will be hosted by MY Private Chef Kitchens and David Anthony Temple, the Dallas underground chef that has been creating so much talk in the food world.  David was one of the trio of chefs we featured last week handling his dishes skillfully and packed with flavor. Now you can experience his cuisine and here are all the details:  Continue reading

Vegan Girl Checks Out Central 214: Summer Lovin’

by Melissa Brenner

[editors note: Steven Doyle and Vegan Girl checked out Central 214 together this week.  Mr. Doyle’s version was run Monday, this is a vegan follow-up to that same visit.]

I love people that love food and alcohol as much as I do, but that is not the only reason that Chef Blythe Beck of Central 214  is on my favorite people list. The first time I met Chef Beck I fell in love with her spunk and sense of humor (she totally allowed me to playfully harass her as she did a cooking demo as she harassed me back paired with some of the most amazing eye rolls I have ever seen). The last time I met Chef Beck I fell in love with her vegan offerings at Central 214.

Chef Beck is known for being naughty in and out of the kitchen. The meal she prepared for me lived up to her reputation and bordered on pornographic. The following is a description of that meal, including the best entrée of my vegan life, so you may want to have your children leave the room.  Continue reading

Vegan Girl Finds Molly Maguires

by Melissa Brenner

Everyone knows I love whiskey, as every good Irish girl should. So, scotch hits into that category. It is super delicious, even though they make it on the wrong island. It’s not a good idea to drink scotch on an empty stomach, but also hard to find vegan eats at a bar that has a good scotch selection. Lucky for Dallas vegans we have Molly Maguire’s.

Touting the best scotch selection in Dallas is a one of the fastest ways to get me to show up at your bar (or anywhere, really). Offering vegan options along with that scotch is the best way to get me to return. This is the beauty of Molly Maguire’s.  Continue reading

Where Can a Vegan Girl Watch the Game?

Dirk would like our Vegan Girl

by Melissa Brenner

Vegan sports fans (yes, we exist) rejoice! While the list of sports bars in Dallas is enormous, trying to find one with vegan options is nearly impossible. This whittles our options down to: eating before heading to the bar and hoping you don’t get hungry during the inevitable double overtime OR going to a friend’s house/staying home (maybe you can watch it at home, but I haven’t had a tv for about 6 years).

During something as exciting as a Dallas team in the finals, it’s just way more fun to be out with the obnoxious crowds in a bar. The noise and excitement, high fiving people you have never seen before, bonding with the drunk guy next to you over that bad ref call….it’s just too much fun to miss. So, my friends, here are a few places that you can go to watch the game, revel in the crowds, and eat vegan treats.  Continue reading
