Central 214’s Blythe Beck Celebrates Our Troops

Chef Blythe Beck and Bradie James autographing items for the troops

by Crave Staff

Central 214’s chef Blythe Beck and her friends are supporting the troops with a special day of food and pampering for service personnel headed back to duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition to posh spa services and Chef Blythe’s Texas-style catered luncheon for the military families, Central 214 will present USO DFW with the special signed “Hello from the Home Front” banner and funds raised from its previous Memorial Day Weekend Benefit Patio Party.

The USO (United Service Organizations) lifts the spirits of America’s troops and their families millions of times each year at hundreds of places worldwide. The organization  provides a touch of home through centers at airports and military bases, top quality entertainment and innovative programs and services. They also provide critical support to those who need us most, including forward-deployed troops and their families, wounded warriors and their families and the families of the fallen.

Kosta Browne Wine Retreat

by Steven Doyle

A shared vision of Dan Kosta and Michael Browne who were working at John Ash & Co, restaurant in 1997 was realized that summer after they pooled their tips to purchase 1,000 pounds of Pinot Noir grapes, a used hand-cranked stemmer and crusher and an old barrel that fleshed out to birth the Kosta Browne Winery.

Recently Kosta Browne hosted a retreat at the winery with Charlie Palmer  and his staff of great chefs preparing the opening meal. The guests were treated to golf, spa treatments and even a cooking demo by John Ash.

Other celebrity chefs were on hand including Emeril Lagasse who provided one of the meals that was fabulous, as did Kent and brother Kevin Rathbun who topped of the evening with their signature barbecue.  Continue reading

Quest for Ultimate Burger: Company Cafe

By Rob Banes

This week’s burger quest took us to Lower Greenville to visit Company Cafe. The menu at Company Cafe features natural fresh items that strive to be organic and healthy. Items on the menu include burgers, ground beef and vegetarian tacos, a gluten-free chicken fried steak, salads and steak frites featuring grass-fed beef.

When we entered the restaurant, we were told to sit at any open table and after sitting, our server took our drink and lunch orders. I ordered the Belmont Burger cooked medium with raw cheddar cheese and bacon which cost $12. A few minutes later the following burger was placed in front of me:  Continue reading

Bastille Day in Bishop Arts

by Rob Shearer   photos by Steven Doyle

Bastille on Bishop is this Thursday, July 14 from 6pm-10pm in the heart of the Bishop Arts District, and the lineup of chefs for the second annual Mussel Competition has been finalized.

It’s a great list of chefs, but sadly, defending champ David Uygur from Lucia is unable to defend his title because his uber popular restaurant has opened since he last competed and he can’t get out of the kitchen. But we do have several returning challengers as well as several new faces competing for the 2011 title.

Why Shop at a Market?

by Jon Alexis

Is Dallas a good food town? A debate that has been waged across dinner tables and blog comment sections. No matter which side of the fence you fall on, ask yourself this question: how was the debate framed?

Most likely, you discussed restaurants. Is our BBQ as good as the Hill Country? Is our Italian up to snuff? Is our sushi really as good as NYC and LA?

All valid questions. But restaurants alone do not a food culture make! Markets are an integral part of any food culture. And guess what – Dallas has fantastic independent markets in every part of the city.  Continue reading

Meet Pastry Chef Jill Bates From Ritz-Carlton

by Steven Doyle

Jill Bates is certainly the darling of pastry chefs in Dallas today.  Her cute but quirky demeanor endears and definitely lends itself to practicing her craft in one of the busier kitchens in Dallas today.  As a pastry chef she has paid her dues and worked the ranks as any savory chef might.

Read on for the first of a series of DFW Pastry Chefs that begins with The Ritz-Carlton and Dean Fearing’s pastry chef, Jill Bates.  Continue reading
