Wine of the Week: An Opulent Malbec from Argentina for $16

IMAG0009

by Andrew Chalk

Malbec has become the de facto global Malbec producer over the last 20 years, producing luscious, fruit-driven wines in all price categories. Our wine-of-the-week this week is an example of the best aspects of Argentinean wine at a price that won’t break the bank.

The 2012 Saurus Select Malbec comes from Patagonia, in the southern part of Argentina. The southerly latitude contributes cooler temperatures to the grape maturation. Maybe this explains why this is a decidedly medium-bodied wine, in contrast to the full-bodied, ripe examples of Malbec that are common from Mendoza. That said, it is more complex than one would expect in this price range with smoky and herbal notes of thyme in the mouth and a long pleasant finish of dark fruit.   Continue reading

Major Chardonnay Tasting Thursday, May 29

chard2by Andrew Chalk

Sigel’s reports that they are doing their annual Benchmark Chardonnay Tasting on Thursday, May 29th from 5-7pm at their Greenville Avenue store. The Quest of the Holy Grail of Beers

darklordby Brian Wall

Beer. When you think about the word and connotation behind the word, you might have some predisposed notions of what beer is and can be for most. Whether it’s sitting around the television watching a game, hanging by the pool/patio/deck on a pleasant night or grabbing a quick drink after work with a plate of wings, all of these hold a normal ideal of beer.

Some people take their beer experience to another level by sampling craft beers and learning more about what is out there, you may even read an article or two and get a notion of what you might be missing. For others, there are select beers that have the same daunting task as finding the “Holy Grail” (the Cup, not the bar) that are brewed in very small amounts, very limited areas and are typically cellared by those that can actually find them.   Continue reading
