Behind The Stick: Emily Roxanne Perkins

by Jason Kosmas

Most people might be surprised to know that my first stint in town was actually at The Porch on Henderson. Coming from New York City, I couldn’t have found a better transition to Big D. Most people might also be surprised to know that The Porch’s cocktail program was set up by bartenders from Milk & Honey.

Now, many of the cocktails have changed as some of the bartenders but philosophy has always been consistent at the bar: well made-easy to understand cocktails, craft beers and an approachable yet adventuresome wine list. All this served by friendly engaging bartenders.   Continue reading →

Seasons 52 Opens At NorthPark Just In Time For The Holidays

by Robyn Folmar

Since we are all recovering from binging on fried goodness at the State Fair, mosey on over to the new Seasons 52 at NorthPark mall where you, shockingly, won’t find the word ‘fried’ or ‘butter’ on the menu.  It will be easy to get yourself back on track with fresh, seasonal food where nothing on the menu is over 475 calories. Stop whining. It’s good. It was also good to be part of a group of invited media to sample through the menu.

Chef Clifford Pleau directs Seasons 52 and has collected awards from places such as Food & Wine and Wine Spectator magazines.  His vision is one of healthy, market-inspired food served in an approachable and sophisticated atmosphere.  No less emphasis is placed on the outstanding wine list led by Master Sommelier George Miliotes.       Continue reading →

Captain Hope’s Kids Chili Cook-Off Was A Bit Unusual

by Steven Doyle

Since 1994 Captain Hope’s Kids has been meeting the needs of homeless children in critical need of basic necessities. On any given night in North Texas, more than 1,100 children will fall asleep in homeless and domestic violence shelters. Sixty-six percent will be under the age of nine and thirty-one percent are infants and toddlers under the age three years.

Earlier this week I was honored to judge a chili cook-off that benefitted Captain Hope. I judge many of these types of functions and was expecting this event to be pretty much the same as any other. I was in for a bit of a surprise.    Continue reading →

Knives Out: Grizzly Bear’s “Shields” and Reinvention

by Dr. Spin

In 2001, on an uninhabited stretch of road between Denton and Allen, I decided that Amnesiac was a bust. Radiohead had presented rewarding challenges with every album up to that point, but after struggling with it for quite awhile, I could not convince myself that the jarring differences between its burbling sound experiments and jagged songwriting would have a payoff like Kid A did. I shelved it and forgot about it. Don’t forget to stop by the Pharmacy…

SER Celebrates Opening With A Paul Hobbs Wine Dinner

by Steven Doyle

Last evening marked SER’s first wine dinner and they played host to Matt Hobbs, brother of winemaker Paul Hobbs. As an invited guest I was able to visit with Matt as he told the Hobbs story. Matt told me of his rich family history and how his brother Paul started growing grapes at a ripe age of 16. It is an interesting story to hear how Paul as a boy became interested in wine.

“One night, before I was born, my dad brought home a mystery beverage and poured it into Dixie cups and passed them around the table. Paul was smitten with what he tasted. The wine they tasted around the family table was a 1962 Chateau Y’Quem sauterne,” started Matt.   Continue reading →
