The tastiest holiday of the year is upon us – Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day. The official Texas holiday celebrates the soul food of the Lone Star state with restaurants across the state participating by offering chicken fried steak specials, entertainment and a whole lot of chicken fried every year on October 26.

In 2011, Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day Founder and bigInk PR CEO Jeffrey Yarbrough worked to have October 26 officially recognized as Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day. The Dallas Elotes Primer

by Steven Doyle

Elotes is a devilish cup of corn that can quite possibly send you into cardiac arrest. It is definitely a guilty pleasure, and one that can be found at some local taquerias and Mexican grocers around the Dallas area. If you haven’t tried this dish we will show you how it is made and tell you where to find a decent version.

We made a stop to visit the elotes man at Taqueria El Si Hay which is located at 601 W Davis in Oak Cliff. The man is furious when it comes to making a quick cup for the low price of $2.50. At times his line will stretch across the gravel parking lot, with many families ordering up to a dozen at a time. The key to this elotes cup is patience. Our man is nothing but methodical; an artist if you will. Continue reading →

La Maison Cointreau And A Chat With Brand Ambassador Kyle Ford

by Steven Doyle

Thought to be the first recipe book about cocktails, the bartender’s guide “How To Mix Drinks or A Bon Vivant’s Companion” was published in 1862, written by Jerry Thomas and read by any bartender worth his flip, fizz or julep. An original copy of this book and dozens of others acquired by Cointreau was on display last night during their French-inspired cocktail party in Dallas.

The setting was the beautiful and historic Aldredge House located on Swiss Avenue. There, guests enjoyed Cointreau cocktails prepared by brand mixer Kyle Ford and later entertainment provided by Lady Rizo who is ringer for a young Rosemary Clooney.      Continue reading →

Red Cross Thoughts on Big Tex Fire

by Anita Foster from Red Alert

Big Tex, the 60 year-old cowboy who towers above everything at the State Fair of Texas, is as much a part of the iconic Dallas, Texas landscape as J.R. Ewing and the Dallas Cowboys. To see him burn was a shock to fair-goers, television viewers and Twitter addicts. People felt helpless to do anything to save Big Tex. When the fire was out, all that remained were memories of better days.
At the Red Cross, we’ve talked a lot about the Big-Tex fire because the reaction of people mirrors what real victims of disaster experience every day. Your “breaking news” happens when a neighbor or your local fire department calls to tell you your home is on fire. You rush to get there.
Just as the crowd assembled at the base of Big Tex to watch the devastation unfold, your neighbors will do the same. They’ll desperately want to help save your home, but there’s nothing anyone can do so they’ll shoot some photos with a smart phone and post to their Facebook page.   Firefighters will fight the blaze with all they have…

The Jellyfish Family Tree Part 3: Getting Into Imperial Drag

by Dr. Spin

Jellyfish deliberately used the familiar melodic and harmonic conventions of yesteryear as a nostalgic vehicle for expressive musicianship. That band cratered under the weight of its own talent, but a few years later, keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and touring guitarist Eric Dover reconvened under the name Imperial Drag.

Although this project was stylistically different from Jellyfish, it operated under a similarly constructed identity. Instead of recalling The Beatles and other late 60s/early 70s pop groups, however, Imperial Drag’s image scaffolded on the conventions of T. Rex and glam rock….   go velvet over at The Pharmacy.
