More Pie Please

by Steven Doyle

This past weekend we were able to grab a slice of pie at the pop-up Pie Emporium located at 314 Bishop in Bishop Arts District during all the Mardi Gras hoopla. We not only sampled several of the mighty tasty pies, which were being sold by the slice, we also spoke to owners Megan Wilkes and Mary Gauntt.

“We started thinking about opening the store last Thanksgiving. We have been doing wholesale for a while now. We sell our pies to Urban Acres and Corner Market on Greenville,” said Wilkes.          Continue reading

Rusty Taco Has Breakfast All Day

by Steven Doyle

Rusty Fenton dropped me a line to let us know he was now serving breakfast tacos all day at his restaurant, Rusty Taco.  I can’t tell you what great news this is for me personally.  Many times I have been on the hunt for a hangover cure and scouedr the city for an early afternoon breakfast taco. I issue a stamp of approval and hope for this to become a trend.

For trivia buffs out there, fenton also mentioned that he sold 562,000 tacos last year. Not bad tacomeister.

First Look: Off-Site Kitchen

by Steven Doyle

Nick Badovinus has a terrific sense of humor, and it’s on display now at his newly opened Off-Site Kitchen located at Irving Blvd and Wycliff.  The restaurant looks as if it has been in operation for years and his menu is dotted with plays on our childhood that will beckon a return visit.

You will understand when you hear about some of the fun items on the menu such as the Crunchy Sloppy Taco which Badovinus said is his sleeper dish that made its way to the menu quite by accident.  In the final days prior to opening they were editing the menu and they decided to merge a large crunchy taco with a Sloppy Joe.  It works just fine for me, and makes a bad ass side item to accompany your burger.    Continue reading

Opa! Pass the Saganaki

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

What’s not to like about flaming cheese?  That is why we set out to find one of the city’s best  versions of saganaki and headed far north to Plano Frisco for a visit to Platia Greek Kouzina.

Move over spanikopita. Yes we love your flaky layers of phyllo and spinach. Of course we adore the ktapadi, the grilled octopus charred in a red vinaigrette.  But the saganaki is the blazing stuff we were craving as we passed through the doorway.   Continue reading
