By Steven Doyle   photos by Joy Jangles

Last week we had the good fortune to meet up with chef Wolfgang Puck who locally owns Five Sixty, and the legendary Beverly Hills restaurant Spago. In all he is responsible for over 100 restaurants across the country and opening more very soon.

We chatted up chef Puck about the Academy Awards, new restaurant trends, eating local, The James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award and we got the skinny on In-N-Out Burger in this fun question and answer session.    Continue reading

Foundry Bar To Open Tonight

by Steven Doyle

For those missing the digs at the former Jack’s Backyard, the Foundry Bar is set to open tonight for a trial run. According to owner Chris Jeffers of Smoke fame just up the road a bit in the Belmont, “We are going to open tonight at five. Come on down. We are still a work in progress, but come see what we’ve done so far.”

The Foundry Bar  is located in West Dallas at 2303 Pittman off West Commerce near Sylvan.

Urban Epicurious Top 10 Food Porn Moments: Lockhart Smoke House

by Bev Garvin

Bev Garvin is a friend of craveDFW, a local social media buff and photographer who maintains a pretty cool local site called Urban Epicurious. Bev joins us to celebrate her top 10 favorite food porn moments of the recent past. We will run these over successive days so you may savor each bite

Sometimes you just crave something that’s nice, big, thick, juicy, smoky, and satisfying. And when you do, the nice folks at Lockhart Smoke House in Bishop Arts have just the thing – meat, and lots of it. This quaint neighborhood shop isn’t pretentious or fancy. When you walk in you’ll order at the butcher counter in the back, pay for your food and take it to your table. There are no forks, there is no sauce, their ribs are dry rubbed, smoked, served on butcher paper and sold by the 1/2 pound.   Continue reading

McCallister Calls Out The Groundhog

by Steven Doyle

Matt McCallister is not one to mince words. If you follow the CampO  chef at all you will find that he speaks his mind fluently. Today he voices an opinion on the findings of Punxsutawney Phil yesterday as he runs through an undisclosed area foraging for Spring onions.

Says the chef, “Found a baby snake while foraging for Spring onions after my run today… Spring onions are everywhere… that groundhog doesn’t know shit.”

Fair dinkum, Matt.

Drink of the Week: People’s Last Stand

by Katie Minshew

While flashy sports bars are in plenty and the typical upscale clubs are popping up all over the Metroplex, it is nice to step into a bar that allows you to take a breath, laugh, and not have to wear a skin-tight sequined dress to fit in. Tucked above view in the Shops at Mockingbird Station rests a cozy bar called The People’s Last Stand. It is small and handsome, with a sincerely personal feel. The owners/managers/bartenders are real people. Kartik Rathore, Omar Yeefoon, Daniel Bristol are great fun to get to know!

They are young, artistic, witty, and charming, making conversation with their patrons about the old-timey movies playing silently on the two flat-screens propped behind the shelves of colorful liquids– Breakfast at Tiffany’s on one and an old Charlie Chapman film on the other.  Brilliant.

Faint familiar music plays in the background. And get this: you can actually hear your conversation with the person sitting across from you. This bar is lively, it is classy, and it created this week’s Drink of the Week! Continue reading

Hid In 2612 The New Bar 828

by Steven Doyle

Jay Jerrier slipped a little information to Scott Reitz over at the Observer and explained his new “dough room”. You can read all about that at this link.

While I was in the ER I didn’t notice that I had a little email slipped to me as well. It explained the Hid In 2612 that Jerrier is hosting in the same dough room. Scott has most of the facts about the second run of what was formerly called Bar 828  in Oak Cliff. We have a little bit more information. Continue reading

Super Bowl Grid Iron Nosh

by David Donalson

Many of you are in the process of planning your Super Bowl parties this weekend and I thought I would share some of my plans for this weekend’s festivities.

First thing I look for is the food because that will dictate what kind of alcohol I will be consuming. Some people will look to have foods from each city represented at the party, which would mean New York style pizza, pastrami you wish was from Katz’s, bagels if you are starting early to represent the Giants and clam chowder, maybe some oysters and cod and Boston cream pie.     Continue reading
