First Look: Townhouse Kitchen + Bar

by Steven Doyle

There are more than a few decent dining choices at the Dallas Galleria, including Second Floor and Oceanaire. Less than a month ago we welcomed the new Townhouse Kitchen + Bar to the landscape. The restaurant is a bit stark in its furnishings, but has a terrific patio and large bar that greets each guest as they enter.

The menu is pretty much across the board featuring most anything that might please, including steaks, seafood and tacos. Tacos? Well, ramped up tacos unlike you might have had at your local taqueria. Think Kimchi Duck or Shrimp Kung Pao.     Continue reading

Not Too Late To Celebrate Chinese New Year

by Steven Doyle

Last week we mentioned the Chinese New Year and a few places in Dallas you might want to celebrate. If you missed out on the celebration, it’s not too late. The New Year continues on through February 3, 2012 as we celebrate the year of the dragon. We celebrated recently in high fashion at Five Sixty where chef Patton Robertson is kicking up the New Year with panache.

If you make plans to visit this week you might want to think about this Wednesday when Wolfgang Puck will be in the house.    Continue reading

Greyt Gala Dinner

by Crave Staff

The Greyhound Adoption League of Texas (GALT) celebrates over a decade of saving greyhound lives March 3 (6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.) with the 11th annual Greyt Gala Dinner and Auction to be held at the Hilton Dallas in Southlake Town Square.

This year’s theme Faith, Hope, and Charity, honors three of the many abused injured greyhounds cared for by GALT over the past several years; Faith, a female missing her right ear, was removed from a hoarder (along with her 8 puppies); Hope, a stray discovered cowering under a house near a busy highway on a freezing morning after suffering for months in the open without adequate food; and, Charity, found severely underweight at only 45 pounds due to starvation.   Continue reading

Half Price Velvet Taco Chicken

by Steven Doyle

Each Monday  you can slide past the front door at Velvet Taco On Henderson in Dallas and grab a hot deal on their rotisserie chicken which includes a whole rotisserie locally sourced chicken, a side of elotes, gremolata potatoes, six handmade corn tortillas, a large side of rotisserie corn pico de gallo, and two sides of Korean BBQ Sauce all for ten dollars. This is half the regular price.

To get the deal go to the back door, knock as loud as you can, and one of the line cooks will open the door. Hand him ten in cash and he will pass off the hot food for you. Pretty cool thing. Think of it as a speakeasy for lunch.

The deal is for the entire day from open to close.

Whachu Tacobot Willis? Mextopia

by Danielle Leahy   photos by Jacque Manaugh

Mextopia has long held a special spot in the hearts of the Tacobots. The site of our first ever Meetup, and the only place we have returned to multiple times Mextopia’s hospitable and the fun we had there is what morphed Tacobots from an online group page dedicated to taco talk into an actual taco eating club. Mextopia is also home of one of the best brisket tacos in Dallas Mextopia’s $2 Tacos and Tecate Tuesday’s are one of our favorite days of the week.   Continue reading

Beer Salmagundi

by Steven Doyle

I ran into the new Deep Ellum Brewing Company sales guru and occasional contributor to craveDFW, Tait Lifto, last evening while hoisting a pint at Common Table. Lifto shared this photo of what appears to be a Dallas beer summit meeting with local heads of state. This is Drew Huerter (DEBC), Charlie Papazian (beer guru), Dennis Wehrmann (Franconia), Wim Bens (Lakewood Brewing Company) and Michael Peticolas (Peticolas) all from left to right.        Continue reading

Urban Epicurious Top 10 Food Porn Moments: Scardello

by Bev Garvin

Bev Garvin is a friend of craveDFW, a local social media buff and photographer who maintains a pretty cool local site called Urban Epicurious. Bev joins us to celebrate her top 10 favorite food porn moments of the recent past. We will run these over successive days so you may savor each bite.

Another equally seductive sandwich, but for totally different reasons, is the Sweet Italian from Scardello Artisan Cheese near the corner of Lemmon and Oak Lawn in Dallas. I stopped in for a quickie and grabbed this to go one day while out running errands at lunch. It’s lusciousness swept off my feet as I indulged in it’s niceties.  Continue reading
