Down the Hatch

by Steven Lindsey   photos by Rod Orta

Next to Christmas, opening day of the State Fair, and that new-car smell, one of my favorite things in the world is Hatch Green Chile Season. It’s a brief time of year when one of the best food-enhancers in the world reaches its peak. From local grocery stores roasting the fiery suckers to restaurants creating hot new menu creations, Hatch Chiles are a thing of culinary beauty.

And Jorge’s in One arts Plaza is keeping things fresh and simple with two new menu items highlighting the pureness that is Hatch. What I wasn’t expecting was a cavalcade of cocktails courtesy of Nacho, the creative genius behind a new era of creativity behind the Jorge’s bar. The drinks just kept coming. And coming. And coming.  Continue reading

Baboush for Carnivores

by Steven Lindsey    photos by Rod Orta

A couple weeks ago, Vegan Girl got my taste buds a-tingling with her review of Baboush, the new Moroccan & Eastern Mediterranean restaurant in West Village. Everything sounded so fresh and delicious that I had to try it for myself, but also venture into territory that might make Vegan Girl hate me—the meaty side of the menu.

First of all, the tiny space accomplishes exactly what owners Sam and Yaser intended: to create a bit of what they call “Arabian Nights” romance in the heart of Dallas. Face away from the windows and all the shirtless frat boys heading out for their evening run and look toward the bar, and it truly does feel like you’re in a different world. Stunning fabrics adorn the walls, ornate tufted stools surround the center tables, and gorgeous lanterns hang from overhead.

The soundtrack of Moroccan and Eastern Mediterranean tunes is a nice touch, especially when a cover of R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion” wafts softly from the speakers with an unexpected sitar accompaniment. Very nice indeed.     Continue reading

People’s Choice Award Sushi: Yutaka

by Steven Doyle

With votes for Shinsei, Sushi Sake and Tei Tei mentioned often, but there was one clear leader of the pack for this weeks People’s Choice Award for Sushi, Yutaka Sushi Bistro on McKinney Avenue in Dallas.

Dallas has plenty of wonderful sushi options, and certainly we appreciate Tei-An, the five star rated soba house in One Arts Plaza, but this is the People’s Choice and they have spoken.     Continue reading

Deep Ellum’s Free Man to Swing Open Today

by Steven Doyle

As we reported back in June, Deep Ellum is growing again. This time it is in the form of a Cajun kitchen with a large bent on music, located at 2626 Commerce, next to Adair’s and a few doors east from Il Cane Rosso.

The Free Man will throw a mixed variety of music at you including live jazz, alt-rock and alt country.

We had been speaking with owner John Jay Myers who said the new venue would open secretly today to work out the kinks (ok, not so secret now) but have a grand opening on the weekend of August 5thContinue reading

Tales of the Cocktail: Gettin’ Tipsy with It

by Steven Lindsey   photos by Rod Orta

Friday was the first day our team of professional drinkers hit the wall. As in stumbled into it walking down the hall from one of the many tasting rooms. With literally hundreds of cocktails to try, even a sip or two of each is enough to view the world at a consistent 45-degree angle.  Nothing a short nap and a long visit to one of the many Hydration Stations won’t fix. Following are some pics from the last couple of days of Tales. And we’ve heard, they save the best for last. Cheers!

Tales of the Cocktail: First Impressions

by Steven Lindsey   photos by Rod Orta

For anyone who loves to drink, Tales of the Cocktail is like an amusement park. We think we’ll call it Boozeneyland. Every minute of every day, there’s something new to discover and we can’t wait to tell you all about everything in detail (which will be in the coming days as there’s not much time to write between sips.)  Continue reading

Pizza D’oh!

by Steven Lindsey     Photos by Rod Orta

Is Dallas big enough for another authentic Neapolitan pizza restaurant? Absolutely. But in the old Chocolate Angel space at Preston and Forest that once was home to Il Cane Rosso, one of the most justifiably buzzed-about pizzerias to hit the metroplex? That’s right where San Antonio transplant Dough will soon open. Talk about déjà vu.

Tasked with the delicious assignment of doing a little pizza recon 300 miles away, I headed to the Alamo city to check out Dough mere days before owners Doug and Lisa Horn plan to open their second location. (By the way, it was reading an article in Rachael Ray’s magazine that forced me to realize the genius of the name Dough. Doug H? DougH?) Yeah, took me a minute, too. But in my defense, I was too focused on the amazing spread on my table.  Continue reading
