BubblyQ at the Ritz-Carlton

by David Donalson        photos by Steven Doyle

BubblyQ is a walk-around tasting and silent auction put on by Young Texans Against Cancer, a non-profit organization focused on raising funds for North Texas cancer research, a very noble cause we fully support and endorse. Held on the patio area in the Ritz-Carlton surrounded by Fearing’s  restaurant, it was an enjoyable evening of dining, sipping and hob-nobbing with beautiful Dallasites.

We had several favorites with the food, led off by recently-resigned Scott Romano of Charlie Palmer and his rendition of rabbit agnolotti in parmesan broth with root vegetables. It was full of flavor, hearty and earthy and went well with Cotes du Rhone Village being poured at the bar.    Continue reading

Four Lounge Keith LaBonte Mixes It Up

by Steven Doyle

Last night we ventured into Four Lounge to visit with barman and proprietor Keith LaBonte. For those that have not yet made their way into the State and Allen lounge, you are missing one of the better cocktails made in the city.

Plenty of props to Lucky, Martensen, Jason and the rest, LaBonte is first to acknowledge that their skills are top-notch. However, LaBonte will note that his style of mixing is polar opposite of the sweeping Prohibition-style cocktail that you will find at Cedars Social or even the new pop-up bar that is opening tonight called 828.                                 Continue reading

First Look at Private Social

by Steven Doyle

We were invited to take a first look at Tiffany Derry’s new restaurant Private Social  this afternoon and truly enjoyed what we found. Along with Derry’s fresh and interesting cooking style we also saw one of our favorite bartenders, Rocko Milano, at the ready making some pretty insane cocktails. We were also surprised to see DLynn Proctor  performing somm duties.

There were a few familiar faces on the wait staff and even spied dread-head Edward Bryan formerly of Il Cane Rosso doing at expo. He worked for Jay Jerrier since the very beginning when he was first tossing pizza at the Chocolate Angel Too location.

We will have a full interview with former Top Chef star Tiffany Derry tomorrow, along with a separate conversation we had today with Rocko, all tomorrow on craveDFW.

Jump for a look at the menu…  Continue reading

Cheesemonger Chat with Ali Morgan: Spreading the Curd

by Steven Doyle

We might justly be accused of having our favorite people in Dallas that regardless of what sort of spirits we might be in, they always manage to make us smile. Ali Morgan from Scardello is just such a person. We caught up with Ali for a late night beer and she was pleased to grant a short interview.

We wanted to chat with Ali not only about cheese, but another obsession of hers — beer. When she discusses either topic her face lights up with excitement, and offers a bit of a giggle. We also wanted to chat with her about her ink obsession on the heels of her latest tat session which we sat in on.   Continue reading

A Hidden Gem of a Burger

by Steven Doyle

Let me tell you about this new burger I tried this past weekend at the most unsuspecting place to have one. In fact, when I mention the name you will most likely think I am quite insane for even ordering this new-to-me burger. I spent my brunch time Sunday at Malai Kitchen, the cute West Village eatery that serves up a fantastic twist on Thai and Vietnamese food.  Continue reading
